So I have a picky picky eater kitty. He happily scarfs down his breakfast Fancy Feast. He sometimes eats his Merrick rabbit or duck pouches, the wellness duck pouches, and walks away from almost all others. His brothers eats everything including what he leave in his bowl. I’m considering saying screw it and just letting him have all Fancy Feast. Is this as unhealthy as it sounds or is it food he’ll happily eat is best?

The Fancy Feast classic flavors are actually pretty decent, which is a darned good thing since that's all Oscar will eat. We just don't feed him any of the fish based flavors after they became a problem for our other cat several years ago.

In a perfect world, we prefer that our cats eat a variety of brands, proteins, and textures. That way, it's not quite so catastrophic in case of a recall, a formula gets changed so that it's no longer acceptable to them, etc. Alas, thus far, Oscar flat out refuses to eat anything but Fancy Feast. But I keep trying, and keep hoping that we'll find something that will tickle his fancy besides Fancy Feast. :)

My cat Tuffy is now 4 years old and has eaten FF classic pate his whole life. His black coat is shiny and beautiful. No vet visits except for yearly checkups and required shots. That being said, I think FF is a good choice.

If he eats it and it is within your budget, I do not see a problem with it.

We feed our nine (ten, counting our feral friend) Purina Naturals dry food and Friskies wet food, along with homemade bone broth. We used to feed them more expensive stuff, but many of them would not eat it. One of them has a sensitive stomach and would vomit most of the other stuff up, if she would even eat it. I know it completely goes against what some people do, but it is what works for us.

Thanks you guys!! I was feeding all Fancy Feast (and a tiny bit of Dr. Elseys dry) before our last vet visit and she called the Fancy Feast fast food so I got all paranoid I was giving him junk. But he eats it and likes it so Fancy Feast it is!

I am feeding my cats Felix Meat or Fish Selection in Sauces as the Jelly versions are not acceptable by my cats. They also like Fancy Feast once in a while but hate Friskies ( I don't know why they never liked them) unless it is the Mixed Grill Pate flavor. Lately I notice they are starting to dislike Felix so I am looking for alternative brands. They also do not like the shredded type but likes pate or filets. Our cats are sometimes driving me crazy. They are more picky eaters than my kids.

I am also slowly keeping them off from kibbles, until totally gone. So far so good.

Unless they're eating something completely unbalanced (like only white meat boiled chicken, and nothing else, no supplements etc.), I wouldn't worry too much, I'd keep some of the Merrick handy just in case he goes on a strike (they like to do this just to see us turn funny colors and watch us scramble for something they'll eat ) but there's more to health than just food.
We've all known, or known of, the guy or gal that smoked since they were 12 and sipped bourbon all day, every day, smoked 3 packs of Marlboro's and never saw a doctor and they died in their sleep, healthy as a horse at the age of 95 or more. Then we all know or knew that guy or gal that grew up eating healthy food, never touched cigarettes, cigars, beer, or alcohol of any kind, exercised daily, saw his doctor regularly, and were dead before they were 30.
I and many others here have had cats live long lives on a raw diet, and cats live long lives on a diet of Purina cat chow. If he's healthy, active, and happy, I wouldn't mess with it unless he's feeling adventurous and wants to try that 4 buck a can stuff so he can eat it like he's starving, you can go out and spend to buy a case and have him walk away
:hellocomputer: I think you're doing fine!

Our vet isn't thrilled about Fancy Feast (or Friskies, for that matter, for the same reason), either: I think it's the relatively high phosphorus in the pates that she objects to. Our cats get a can a week of Fancy Feast Classic so it gets evened out, though I probably wouldn't want to feed a lot of high-phosphorous food to an older (edit: meaning "senior") cat. (Ours are about six.)

I won't feed the other FF because of the wheat gluten! (Our vet's not a fan of that, either!) Some of those foods, though, do have lower phosphorus. (Or at least used to, back when we had a kidney cat.)

There are new Fancy Feast Gourmet Naturals that don't have byproducts (so might have lower phosphorous with less bone and liver), though the gravy foods still have wheat gluten. Our cats weren't thrilled with the chicken pate I brought home the other day but we'll see what they think of the beef.

All that said, I agree with mizzely mizzely that Fancy Feast Classics are pretty decent food: they've very low-carb foods with no filler (IMHO, I'd much rather feed animal-based byproducts than, say, potatoes, peas, lentils, or chickpeas), unlike plenty of more expensive foods some of which also have relatively high phosphorous. Expensive doesn't guarantee specific-appropriate -- it's so important to read labels and study up on the numbers for individual foods, particularly if your cat has a health issue!

I've tried time and time again with different foods - thinking maybe, just maybe she'll think it's a Fancy Feast offering but with new texture/flavor!

Yes, my cat (and previous) love FF pates.
If I get lucky she'll eat Friskies once in awhile, but I try not to because those poops stink something awful.

Apparently the price on the can bares no relevance to my little princess's preference. So she's slumming it with FF ;)
Nevertheless, I have a case of Holistic Select chicken pate in the closet, thinking maybe someday I can try sneaking it in her dish again. Heck it looks & smells decent enough, I might try it.

Do what we do, open the new can of food and then act like there's no possible way the cats can even sample it. I tell them it's for the dogs, which really makes them mad. Then they get demanding, we pretend to give in, and they devour it

My cat will only eat Fancy Feast. I've tried other brands such as Blue Buffalo, Wellness, Nature's Variety Instinct, etc, but she thumbed her nose up at all of them.
I primarily feed her the pate varieties, but occasionally will give her the shredded or gravy varieties.

My cat loves these but be careful, they have a lot of wheat gluten in them, so I don't feed them very often.

Can that wheat gluten cause face allergy
Wheat gluten is a vegetable-based product that raises the protein numbers for cat food. Cats, though, are carnivores: they need meat protein not wheat protein. Wheat gluten also contains carbohydrate calories, which are basically empty calories for a cat.

Some cats do have or develop allergies or sensitivities to wheat and other grains. Our previous cat seemed to, though we can't be sure what, exactly, caused her digestive problems.

No matter what, wheat gluten is not exactly a natural food for a cat! Like Rini's cat, our previous cat loved Fancy Feast foods with wheat gluten but, knowing now what I didn't know then, I would never feed it again to a cat unless I absolutely had to.
