Hi I was wondering if I should be worried about my cats incision site? Shes nine months old and got her spay 2 days ago. It looks open and I can’t seem to put an e-collar or “cat onsie” to prevent her from licking her wounds. Not to mention she is hyper as heck and is super hard to control. She wants to play all the time and she jumps on everything. I’m scared that if I put the e collar on her when I’m away she’ll hurt herself even more. Please help! I am an inexperienced and overly stressed cat mom.

I cant see any stitches so I presume the wound is glued. It looks as if a little of the glue has come away but the area doesnt look infected or swollen. I know its difficult to keep her quiet, but you need to stop her jumping for several days. Try again with a coller or onsie, it is important that she does not lick the area, it will remove the glue and/or could cause infection. As far as I can see from the photo, she looks fine but just be watchful. If things change or you are still worried, take clear photos and send them to your vet for his opinion. Let us know how she is doing.

I have never used a collar and have never had a problem. For a two day old incision it looks normal. I am a little concerned about the redness seen at the top of the incision. But it could just be from the injury to the skin. Keep an eye on it and if it gets bigger contact your vet. There will be some lumpiness felt, this will flatten out over time, swelling is normal, and there is also swelling inside. Now taht you have taht excellent picture, take another in two days so they can be compared. then you will know if it is teh same or getting worse. Any change, like colored drainage (clear, maybe a tiny bit of blood is fine) or spreading redness needs attention right away. so far so good!

Try an inflatable donut collar.

Some cats will never bother their incisions after surgery, but for the ones that do it can end up being very dangerous - so if she is messing with her incision then you do need to stop that asap.

After one of my boys had major surgery we found he took best to an inflatable collar (hated both the traditional cone and the body suit that we tried), and it did the job of stopping him doing major damage to the incision while it was healing. An inflatable collar can be a little bulky, but it doesn't get in the way of peripheral vision in the same way a cone does.

He took to that and managed to wear it for 3 weeks during his recovery, when all other options sent him into a panic.

Hi! So update. I ended up putting an e collar on her and she continued to jump around a bunch so I put her in a crate and she seems fine. No crying or anything as long as I’m not in the room. So I plan on checking in on her every few hours. Will update tomorrow with another photo.

Thanks for the update. I'm glad she has settled with the collar and seems to be tolerating it.

Can you find someone to babysit? My friend asked me to babysit her Spike when he had penis surgery because he hated the E Collar so much.. I sat with him for 8 hours. Then she asked me to take him for the stitches removal because she was too upset.
