Hi.

My cat Leo is about a year old and today he has randomly started smelling of kind of off milk. But he has no access to any milk. He eats wet and dry cat food and has access to water.
The smell is quite bad and coming from his mouth. Just wondering what it is??

He is an indoor cat and has had no vaccinations as I was told indoor cats would not need them.

I'm from the UK. Thank you for your help though. Any help o advice would be so welcome which is why im here or any previous experience anyone has :) I'm hoping it's just a bad bit of food he's had and the smell has stuck to him. So I'm gonna wait a day or so to find out if the smell goes.

You didn't see any description of the several bad breath smells in that link that seemed like it fit your kitty's situation?

No it smells like off milk. Not ammonia bile or anything else

Are you able to change his diet a little bit? Give him some boiled unseasoned unsalted chicken or turkey for a meal or two?

I would see if u can start brushing his teeth. If his mouth is already smelling so foul it’ll be likely he’ll just have bad teeth. One of mine (even tho he’s the same age as the other) has very poor dental health just because of his genetics. Even with me brushing his teeth. But it helps.
You’ll also want to make sure he gets yearly dental cleaning at the vet. Maybe not now but in a few years.
Just try to see if you can introduce brushing them for now. Most cats don’t like it. I have to hold mine down but I give them kiss and cuddles and treats and play with them after so they aren’t so traumatized by it.

Okay thank you I will try this. The smell has only been here a day so I will wait to see if it goes first.

If you're noticing stinky breath, you may want to have a vet take a look at his teeth.

In addition, please get him his shots. You can track diseases in from outside. He needs basic protections.

Just jumping in to say that indoor cats do need vaccinations. Rabies is especially important (and yes, an animal like a bat could get into your home and bite your kitty), but there are so many other preventable diseases they they will protect your cat from.
The poster said they were from the UK - We do not have rabies here in the UK, please do NOT tell UK posters that they need this vaccination or they or their pets are at risk of the disease as it is completely unnecessary unless a pet is travelling overseas, and the vaccine is not given as routine for pets here - it is wrong to vaccinate for something they won't come into contact with.

Vaccinations for other diseases that are common here are important though.

If a cat has bad breath though, my first port of call would be my vet - I would suspect a dental issue or a minor URI (upper respiratory infection) at the minor end of the scale - bad breath is often an early symptom of many things and should be investigated.

Okay, didn't realize that about the UK, but my comment about other vaccines stands.

I wasn't purposefully suggesting an unnecessary vaccine... It was an honest mistake.

I know it wasn't purposeful, but we do have posters here from all around the world and lots from the uk, so it is worth being aware of that when giving vaccination advice :) I didn't mean to make you feel bad, but I didn't want the poster going to their vet to ask for that when it is unnecessary :)

I actually hadn't even seen the later post about being from the UK, since the vaccination post came earlier in the thread and I just responded immediately to the notion that indoor cats don't need vaccines.

But I will keep the UK rabies issue in mind.

FYI for anyone else reading this, the UK is the only region that has completely eliminated rabies.

Thanks anyway guys. He is completely smell free this morning! Must have been some bad food or he must have had his face somewhere he shouldn't have!
I will get him his shots tho :)
