Background: My wife and I are trying to find a cattery to purchase a pedigreed British Shorthair kitten. We don't have much knowledge on the breed other than temperament, looks, etc, so we're newbies when it comes to trying to make sure we're making the right choice when finding a cattery to purchase a pedigreed BSH from.

We had this question for the cattery we were thinking of buying a kitten from:

Does the cat come with papers? Meaning where we can see the lineage of the parents? We want to be sure he is pure bred.

I realize now that we should have said pedigreed, rather than pure bred.

Here is the reply:

So he does not come with TICA papers. He isn’t a pure breed British shorthair. I cannot call him that. When breeding Scottish folds you cannot breed Scottish fold with Scottish fold, and so it has to be mixed with another breed. We do British shorthair (straight ear) and Scottish folds (folded ears). In the litter, some kittens have folded ears and are Scottish fold and some kittens don’t have the folded ears and so are British shorthair (but not pure breed).

I'd appreciate any comments you have on what the breeder said. From what I've read (on the internet ), you can have Scottish folds that have straight ears. If this is true, is she calling the straight-eared Scottish folds BSHs?

Some catteries use British Shorthair as an outcross for Scottish Folds. When breeding a Scottish Fold (folded-ear) to a British Shorthair, you will have some kittens that are folded-ear and some that are straight-ear. Kittens that have a Scottish Fold parent are not British Shorthairs, even if they have straight ears, because Scottish Fold isn't an acceptable outcross for the British Shorthair. The straight-eared kittens from such a litter are straight-eared Scottish (also known as Scottish Straight).

I agree with lutece lutece . It sounds like the breeder isn't really familiar with the standard for pedigreed cats, but at least they're honest in not calling their cats purebred. I would look for a breeder who does have registered British SH cats.

Scottish Straights are simply adorable too! Those big eyes! Although they should be registered as Scottish Straights, shouldn't they?

Anybody can make a pedigree. You want to ask if the cat is registered with a reputable cat registry.

Thanks for the information Lutece. That's what I was thinking and makes sense. This breeder doesn't have any Scottish Straights on her website, so she obviously isn't as knowledgeable as she should be. I'm dropping this breeder from any consideration.

Agreed GoldyCat. This is one of many red flags for this cattery, so we're steering clear.

Thanks Willowy. Now that we have more information, I think we're going to go for a Scottish Straight!

l'm going to throw this out there: l was going to buy a blue BSH from a breeder, only to have the kitten die. I waited for the next litter next year same parents - kitten died. I was refunded my money. This breeder was not blood-typing her cats, and BSHs are one of the breeds that high a high incidence rate of B-types. When looking at kittens from breeders, the good ones will list the kitten/cat's blood type on its info page.

I think you are wise to steer clear of this breeder, as they are not knowledgeable in the difference between Scottish Folds/Straights and British Shorthairs/Longhairs. Brits can be used as an outcross, along with American Shorthairs, but any kittens resulting from these breedings would be registered as Scottish Folds/Straights. I absolutely adore Straights and am looking to breed them exclusively in the future as they are healthier than their folded counterparts. They are wonderful kitties with amazing temperaments, and are just as adorable as Folds. I’ve tried to show them as much as possible in TICA to try and help them be more accepted in the cat fancy. These are my two girls I’m currently showing, Agnes and Doris. They say Straights rule! 53C91008-67B1-4E74-B77F-C236FE49C83E.jpeg C572EE47-BB1C-42F4-B045-AFE0A1DBDB3E.jpeg 8742584A-1838-47A0-93A5-91CBE6CB8F5C.jpeg

Thanks for all the advice! We found a cattery that we are 100% comfortable with, and have put down a deposit on a Scottish Straight. Unfortunately, I have to fly to Toronto in May to pick him up, but it will be worth the trip.

He is absolutely precious! :lovecat3: Have you thought of a name yet or are you waiting to meet him in person and bring him home? Either way please keep us posted and best of luck in May. :crossfingers:

Thanks so much! We were to choose from 3 available kittens, and the breeder sent pictures 1 x 1 and this was the first picture sent. We knew right away that he was the one. Also he was the only straight available, which is what we wanted. It just worked out that he was the cutest :clapcat:. My wife, 9yo daughter and I are trying to decide on a name, but haven't been able to all agree on one that everyone likes. Here are some that we're considering:
Gibbs
Niles
Kiwi
Jagger
Bono
Finn
Fergus
Eddie/Eddy
Luke
Solo
Hans
Ely
Scotty

Great choices for names - Scotty would be the obvious for a Scottish Straight but so would a Scottish name, e.g. Gavin, Finlay, Angus, etc. I'm glad to hear you are including your 9 y.o. daughter in the decision.

RiosDad wife here :D
Neely,
Love the name recommendations! I think we will never agree on one so we will have to pick a name once he arrives. We are long term fans of NCIS (well, mostly me) so hence the name Gibbs on the top of the list.
