I found out earlier this week that my beautiful Muffy has breast cancer. The vet said there was an obvious mass under her tummy. The vet gave us the statistics (90% of mammory tumors are malignant, 10% benign) and that if she was to have surgery, we could be wasting money as there is a good chance that it's not successful. It felt like she had already written her off. My Muffy is 13 years and 5 months to be exact. She is due to go the vets on Monday for X-rays, bloods etc and surgery if the cancer hasn't spread.

I'm so distraught and cannot stop crying. I've read horror stories with surgery and recovery, but also read successful survivor stories. I just don't know what is best for her. I know this much, I couldn't bare her not surviving surgery, and dying on an operating table surrounded by strangers but I cannot bare letting her go and giving up on her either.

All I know is this hurts so much, I cannot breath. My beautiful Muffy. My best friend. :'(

Hi. I am so sorry to hear Muffy might have mammary cancer. I wish it would be determined to be just a benign tumor.

Has the vet talked to about your concerns of her dying during surgery? Maybe the likelihood is much less than you think??

I don't know if you want to pursue reading about other members on this site that have dealt with mammary tumors, but if you do here is a link to several related threads.

I haven't been through this with a cat, but the dog I grew up with had several mammary cancer surgeries from the age of 10 to 13, and recovered each time. This was in the fairly early days of mammary surgery for animals. Now, I would have elected to take all of the tissue from both sides at once. We did have to euthanize her the year she turned 14, but this was because her arthritis was no longer responding to the available medications, not because of the cancer.

Don't hesitate to seek a second opinion, if that would ease your mind, but do it SOON! Ask about what the surgery would entail, as well.

Hello
I think, possibly, that your vet was just trying to let you know all sides of the picture.

How are you today? How is Muffy?

Do the surgery, you will at least know you tried what you could. The chances of her not making it are definitely slim. I had a 16 year old survive surgery. If you don't, there will always be that huge what if. If it has spread just give her all the comfort and love you can, you know her the best and will know if her suffering gets to be too much.
I'm so sorry this had to happen, I'll keep you both in my thoughts and prayers. Please try to be strong, she needs you right now. Don't hesitate to post, there are many who understand what you are going through.

Thank you so much for the replies.

We are just about to head out with Muffy to the vets. Please cross your fingers and toes, and keep her in your thoughts today.

It's not looking good. They tested her kidneys and her marker is very high, double than what it is supposed to be. They can't operate. The vet told us we can collect her at 5pm. We need to get a urine sample at home and bring her back with the sample tomorrow. Between now and 5, I don't know what they are doing with her. My mum is the one that spoke with the vet over the phone but we were in a busy and hectic envorionment so was struggling to hear/process what was being said. When we collect her, I'll get more information. :(

We made the heartbreaking decision to put her to sleep earlier today. Her kidneys were too damaged, she wouldn't have been strong enough for the surgery. The cancer was too agressive and had spread also, the prognosis was not good. We spared her now, before would she would deteriorate and be in pain, which would have happened ver quicky. I am so heartbroken and was the hardest thing I have had to do but I couldn't be selfish with her, I needed to let her go.

Rest in peace Muffy, I love you so much. <3

:alright: Muffy is now your :angel:kitty, and is no longer in pain. RIP little Muffy.

When you are ready, and want to share with us pictures and your homage to Muffy, you can do so in the Crossing The Bridge section of this site. Muffy can have a lasting tribute there that you can visit and add to whenever you want, and to allow all of your fellow cat lovers to see and honor her as well.
