It was on our local news that they're putting a "Marty" in a Giant store in eastern PA. Eventually all Giant stores will have a Marty.
I've been in my Giant here in Maryland and I have not seen a "Marty" yet. I hope I never do. It's freaky looking.

"Marty" definitely isn't cute and those huge googly eyes are kind of creepy. I prefer the short egg shaped robots that are used for security purposes:

The co-worker who lives near me said she was going to that supermarket today. I told her to watch out for the roaming robot and showed her the picture.

It is creepy. It would cause me to shop elsewhere. Like others, I think they are spies. ;) Most anything else they chose to spend the money on would be better than this.

A few years ago I was working in a hospital where they were testing robots to deliver from the pharmacy to the various medical units. Not scary looking: they looked like small refrigerators on wheels. They rolled around the hospital, delivering packages to each unit. There was a code to unlock them when they got to their destination.

But they didn't always work, it was a new technology and they had not resolved all the problems.

One day, a team from the pharmacy was running around trying to find a robot that got lost. They were asking everyone if they had seen the robot... They asked me and I said I had just seen it... "where?" they asked.. It told them "it was in the lobby asking the soda vending machines what time she got off work."

They were not amused. They issued a complaint to my manager, who couldn't stop laughing when I told her the whole story

Maybe they should put GPS or other tracking method in the robots.

A local NPR story about the robots:

Cleanup On Aisle 9: Robots Arrive At Grocery Stores Near You

So the robot detects an issue and sends a notification to a person located hundred of miles away who just confirms if the issue is something that needs to be taken care of immediately and, if it does, tells the robot to sound an audible alert message to warn customers and store employees?? Wouldn't it make more sense to have a store manager monitor the robot via an app or something and then have an available employer resolve whatever the issue is?

Or use the close circuit tv for regular sweeps of the store?

Or that. I don't see why the robot needs to be controlled by a person who may be located in another state:dunno: All the person does, at least from what the article says, is to tell the robot to sound an alarm or to ignore whatever it is that is on the floor, maybe a kid having a tantrum.

I was at the grocery store yesterday and ran into a good friend. While we were standing around talking the robot came up to us and just stayed there, with the cameras pointed at us. It was quite disconcerting.

How creepy. Was he reporting you as a spill that needs to be cleaned up?

"Marty" showed up! He was at our Giant last night, just moving around. He got a lot of attention. I hate to say this, but he made me smile. I wish he talked, although that might freak me out for a while.

I didn't see the robot the last two times I went to the supermarket:frown: Not sure if it's turned on at certain days or hours.

I think the robot greeting customers would be ok:think:

We don't have anything like this yet here in the UK, though it seems like a fun idea! As long as there aren't any jobs being taken away from humans it seems like a good thing - the only thing I don't like about robots and machines taking over is that it makes it increasingly difficult for humans to find jobs.

Marty was back today :woo:

The sign on Marty says "This store is monitored by Marty for your safety. Marty is an autonomous robot that uses image capturing technology to report spills, debris, and other potentially hazards to store employees to improve your shopping experience".

Marty was at the store again tonight, just kind of gliding around. There was a guy trying to talk to him, but no luck. Rick and I were at the meat counter, waiting while the butcher cut some pork chops for us. And Marty was right there with us.

Oh, and if you get too close to him while he's "walking"? He'll stop and wait for you to go by him, then he'll start up again.

All in all, I think he's pretty cool.

"Marty is watching your every move and probably recording your conversations too. Don't misbehave around Marty!"

Have these store people not seen and learned lessons from the movie "Alien"?
I know, right? Didn't they watch Terminator? Or Blade Runner? Or Ex Machina? Robots are bad!
