Hi, all,

I searched the forums and found some older threads on litter issues and about what kind of boxes are best for kickers--you know, cats who like to sprinkle litter like fairy dust. Just curious what kind of boxes you all use? Do any of you have the litter all over the floor issues? I have the mat that is supposed to "catch" what falls off your cats feet, but it definitely doesn't do the job. I am currently looking to buy a new box. Just wanted to get some opinions from you all and see what is working for your kitties.

As always, thanks for your help!

I gave up and just bought a handheld dustpan and brush that I keep near my cat's box. I just sweep when it's needed. -sigh-

We have deep diggers and high pee-ers. Regular litter boxes are so small and short.
We got a big plastic storage bin and cut a higher square hole in the side (remember to make it a little higher than usual to help keep the litter in). We don't use the lid. Pour in the litter and there you have it!

Some people also get one of those bins and just put their regular littler box inside of the bin- smaller and easier to scoop, but still contains the litter. Once again, I personally wouldn't use the lid.

Now there's always some trailed out the entrance, but that's expected, really. At least it contains the litter from the actual digging and pawing.

Like LeiLana80 LeiLana80 , I also use an over sized storage bin with a cut out for going in and out. We still get some litter out of the box where the cut out is, but it's way better than a normal litter box.

If you've got carpet you can get a piece of linoleum at the big box hardware to put under it. This will make it easier to sweep up the litter. But I'd keep the litter mat too, since it will help get the litter off their feet. We got the linoleum when the dog liked to ease her joints by sitting in the rather large water bowl. That's how I discovered throwing it away may require an extra fee for the trash pick up. The linoleum not the the litter mat.

for a litter mat we used the largest mat you put in your shower or tub to keep from slipping.

If you have the space you can buy a washing machine liner for under $20. It’s white, about 30 inches square and about an inch or two high. In does take up space but catches the litter that goes over the side or that gets spilled when scooping.

I use a litter box with lid. but the transition from non-lid to lid took my cats sometime to get used to. You have to place both side by side for at least 2 weeks, based on my experience.

and be aware that some of the larger/taller cats just don't like boxes that touch their heads or backs. I, personally, would have thought the good hiding spot, cave thing would appeal to them all. But, you know, cats.

My cat could kick litter across the room even from hooded boxes. Got one of these. Fits a big, fat cat. No mess. Chewy, Petco, Petsmart, etc. Less stink too.
