Big Round Scabs!

Hi everyone. So, I took my cat to the doctor a couple of weeks ago and he wasn’t super sure what was happening with my girl. He shaved her where she has these big scabs on her back, but said taking a sample and testing what it is would take about 6 weeks so we didn’t do it. He said it may be ring worm but it doesn’t seem to be getting any better with the spray he gave us, so I am wondering if anyone has ever seen anything similar and could help me out. Hi. Did the vet test to see if it was ringworm by either checking the some hairs around the area underneath a microscope or use an ultraviolet light? These simple tests usually can identify most types of ringworm. But, yes, the best way to is culture skin scapings for the fungal growth.

I don't know for sure whether that is ring worm or not - it wouldn't seem likely anyone on this site is going to be able to confirm it is ringworm if the vet couldn't seem to do so while looking at in person.

You have an anti-fungal spray to use (I assume it is anti-fungal) - but what about any oral anti-fungal meds? And, did the vet talk to you or give you any instructions on how to clean your home to get rid of fungal spores that can hang around for a long, long time?

Ringworm is also highly contagious to not only other cats, but to you as well; so, be careful about keeping your hands washed as well as your home clean.

If she isn't getting any better, I think your best bet is to take her back and have the spots actually tested. You really need to know what you are dealing with, here. It looks a bit like ringworm, but...just not sure. There are other things that look very similar. And I'm with FeebysOwner in wondering if the vet used a black light on her. Ringworm flourescs under black light. Those little fungi just glow like stars!

Thanks for the replies! The vet did look with a UV light and said usually they glow, but these were not glowing, only one a tiny bit in the center was glowing. So he treated it as ring worm, with the anti fungal spray. He did talk to us about keeping our hands clean after we touch her and stuff and not to touch her scabs. Thanks!

Try brewing a cup of chamomile tea, made from commerical tea bags (coffee/tea aisle of the grocery store), chilling it, and swabbing the area with that. It will keep the itching down so she doesn't worry at them, and it is antibacterial and antifungal. It may help on that front, as well.

I just recently went through this with one of my boy cats, and because I had just dealt with a bout of ringworm with stray kittens I took in, I assumed that was what I was dealing with. It turned out to just be a reaction from fleas so he got a steroid injection and an antibiotic.
