My sweet 8 year old mei is going in for his pre-dental cleaning blood panel this Sunday, and I am having some anxiety about the whole thing. He's had blood work before and has been put under before. Though that was for an emergency bladder flush to remove a blockage. I know he'll probably be fine, as he's basically healthy *with some mild diarrhea sometimes* i know he really needs this done, as he has some pretty heavy calculi build up on his teeth.
Can someone relate past experiences to me to help me understand how this all plays out and about recovery??

Allie had 2 teeth removed and a cleaning in late december, she did perfectly fine with no problems...She was geoggy when she came home

I also had anxiety and it was needless in the end

We're scheduled for a cleaning on Tuesday!
Pip has not outgrown her juvenile gingivitis/stomatitis and this is her second cleaning in her 4 young years. I worry too (which is why I waited two years between cleanings) but I know that the health impact of dental issues outweighs the worry over cleaning. At least that is what I am telling myself!

Last time, I told the dental vet that I was a nervous wreck and he was very reassuring and the clinic called me right after to tell me all was well. That helped.

My last cat had to have all her teeth removed at age 11 due to chronic inflammation and she recovered perfectly.

My vet always does a blood panel beforehand. I think everybody has anxiety before anything that involves putting the cat to sleep. Good luck with it all.

I'm not trying to scare you, and this isn't anything dire, but there is always a chance that your cat may not react to sedatives appropriately.
Tommy has been under general anesthesia maybe six times. He was always fine until the last time when we got his teeth cleaned, and he was really overstimulated and bitey with us, like he couldn't even see who we were. We left him alone for the afternoon, he slept it off, and was fine the next day.
Amalie has had dentals and extractions under general anesthesia 4 times. She has always come home just fine except the pupil dilation from the pain injection and it makes her a little stupid trying to eat.

A vet voted against giving me drugs for Tom's car anxiety because they said if he reacts the opposite on the road trip, I'm stuck with that cat in that state for hours...in the car...trying to focus on the road.

Yeah, my poor kitty has some pretty heavy anxiety *like mother like son* and I just hate putting him through stressful things. I love his vet though and I know she'll take care of him like her own. I just want his little teeth to not be so inflamed and upset.

I'm glad you have a lot of trust in your vet as that should help alleviate some of the anxiety. It's always a relief when you know who will be performing the dental and that they are already familiar with your kitty.

Here is an Article that discusses gingivitis in cats and my be helpful for you plus another on dental care:

Evie just had her teefies cleaned last Friday! She was quite drunk upon coming home and was wobbly for a few hours, but afterwards she was fine. Her least favorite part was only being able to get like 1oz of food after having nothing after 10 pm the night before...lol
