My usually easy to pill kitty has decided to refuse to swallow the pill, so we end up with foaming at the mouth and he gets very little of the med. Would diuting it with water work or would that be even worse?

I think diluting it with water would make it worse. It is bitter and could be spit out and/or proper dose not be ingested.

My kitty gets 1/8 Mirtazapine every 72 hours via chicken flavored capsule from www.capsuline.com. Capsule is administered using a pill gun followed by a small treat.
She doesn't mind it at all.

I buy the #3 CatCaps in pack of 100 for $7.99.

I understand from my vet that Mirtazapine can also be compounded into 1mg capsule to be given every day.

In any case, it is best to encapsulate or hide the pill.

Have you tried Pill Pockets or something similar?

Ask the vet about compounding the mirtazapine for easier giving. Wedgewood Pharmacy lists these options: Mirtazapine Medication & Information for Animals, Wedgewood Pet RX, Wedgewood Pet RX A local compounding pharmacy may also be able to do this as well. Chew treats, transdermal gel, capsules that can be opened and the powder sprinkled into canned food or other yummy treat, or tiny tablets that can be hidden in a Pill Pocket are probably the best bet.

Are you using it as an appetite stimulant? Mirtazapine can be purchased in the form of a transdermal ointment called Mirataz. The ointment is applied to the inside of the ear. I believe it’s 2 mg per dose. Really easy. Ask your vet for Mirataz. It’s a manufactured prescription med, so you don’t need to use a compounding pharmacy.

My cat gets a daily liquid dose of mirtazapine. He hates pills and fights like a lion.
