I recently switched from urinary so to blue sensitive stomach due to throwing up...Now he always scarfed and sometimes barfed but the new food is like rabbit pellets... He laps it up with his tongue.

I only fed him a tablespoon or less and I went back to semi sleep
Woke up to regurgitated food again(im sure its regurgitated or I would have heard his wretching)as he did it yesterday too... Actually yesterday at 5am he threw up and made me upset as im trying to move past this...Then he scarfed and barfed at 7am then at 5pm I found out he threw up a hairball in my room...

Im sure yesterday was due to the hairball....

Is scarf and barf something to worry about? Im now feeding him off the rug with his food all spread apart

You see me a lot in the forums lately, I lurk when I have kitty health issues, when they are fine I tend to dissapear...

Hi. Getting him to eat slower - as you are trying to do - should help. The hairball might have been something that was also causing the barfing, but hopefully he got that out of his system when he threw it up at 5pm. If he continues to barf, you might have something else going on - or not all of the hairball has come up.

Two things you can do - 1.) you can use a bowl with a golf ball in it to help slow him down if you don't want to continue to put food on the rug. He'll have to eat around the ball. You can also use a mini-muffin pan (uh, if you have one) and place some food in each muffin-cup to help slow him down. And, there are bowls you can buy for that purpose as well.
2.) you can give him a dab of butter or margarine to lick off your finger - or his paw - to help him pass the hairballs. Even Vaseline will work if he will eat it. There are other things to try to help with the hairballs, but if he will eat the butter/margarine, or even the Vaseline, they are all effective. Feed it daily for the first couple of days, and then you can probably back off to 2-3 times weekly.

Hi! I don't know if you have mentioned it elsewhere or not, but are you certain that he is regurgitating because he is eating too fast and not vomiting? Is it possible that he could have some kind of food intolerance/allergy? I noticed in other threads that you mentioned your cat was itchy and the vet recommended a hydrolized diet. Did they recommend the hydrolized diet because they want you to do a food trial with a novel protein?

Yea he threw up right after eating, maybe less then 10 min after....I took him off urinary so and now hes on corn free food for maybe 9 days now...He was abnormally throwing up on urinary so, he doesnt have those episodes since his diet change. Hes still itchy though but I read it takes like over 60 days to confirm anything positive from the new food regading allergy’s..

Thing is I only fed him a little bit this morning so I knock on wood that it was scarf, as he inhales it in record time. This kibble is small and i have seen him lap up with his tongue several kibble at a time

Tbh, from a lot of members on here, they say cats don't really chew kibble, they swallow it whole. I can hear Feeby crunching her dried food, so I can't attest to that.

Well, I hope you got some info here that you can use - and that will benefit you. And, please keep us posted as to how things are going, and don't hesitate to continue to ask questions in the meantime!!

My persian boy still scarf and barf with his new food, possibly because its very small...I fed him a little and 6 min later grumble, I feed him a little, 2 min later barf... He scarfed and barfed his bigger urinary so but not nearly as much...

10 min later he wants to eat, I notice periodically he gets hiccups...Air???

I will try raising his dish, so far no vomiting throughout the day, I been giving him 1/2 capsule egg lecithin daily and combing him a lot...

Wish Oliver luck

Quote”You might argue that cats are built by nature to stand on four legs, while we stand on two, but I nevertheless noticed that our four Persians seemed to suck their food off their plates, then gulped it down along with air, creating a propensity to vomit afterwards.”

Just want to finish this thread by saying after raising his bowl all vomiting/regurgitation has stopped, no hiccups! He lost almost 1/2 pound because of this and hes putting it back fast.

Nobody ever told me this and only found it through google, then I searched raised bowls on this site and found the crucial information..

If I had taken Oliver back to the vet, rest assured they would have doped him up on steroids without a second thought and claim ibd

Awww - so sorry to hear that. Are you going to try to feed Oliver less in one feeding and increase the number of feedings he gets? Is his dish a slow feeder one? If not, you might need to try that as well.

Tbh, if none of this works, you are going to have to take him to the vet for a full check-up/blood panel - if you haven't already. You can't really take the chance of him losing weight like he did before. Steroids, should the vet want to go down that route - as you are concerned about - should be temporary while they search for the real cause.

And, if you are worried the default diagnosis is going to be IBD, you might want to consider a second vet opinion. You can always ask for copies of Oliver's records from your current vet to give a new vet, at least reducing some of testing duplication costs.

Does blue in your post refer to Blue Buffalo?

I fed BB for several years. After the third male urethra blockage and a new vet she advised me to change brands. Her words "I see at least one male cat or dog a week with a blocked urethra. And 100% of the time they are being fed BB". And some other words about why it is a terrible choice. And at $2k for each treatment, I didn't need much encouraging to change brands. YMMV of course.

Im going to switch both cats to purina urinary as I already have a new bag and both eats it...I think the sensitive stomach is giving Allie diarrhea

I know you are trying to get rid of Allie's diarrhea, but the recommended way to switch foods is to mix them - at first mostly the 'old' stuff with new and then over time, more new, less old. Sometimes just an abrupt food change can cause stomach/digestive stress.
