I've been using Mom's old West Bend electric skillet to make my sourdough English muffins, pancakes, etc. It does not heat evenly. Even at a low heat, if I'm not really careful, one side of the muffin will be really dark and it's not cooked through.

I've been thinking now for a while about getting a griddle. As usual, thinking about it, but not actually getting one.

Do you have one? Do you like yours? Do you use it?

We looked at griddles on Saturday. Rick asked me, "If you get a griddle, what kitchen item are you willing to give up?" I looked at him and said, "You cannot be serious! You really expect me to give something up? Are you insane?" There was a another couple in the aisle and they started laughing. The woman said that she and her husband have this argument all the time, only it's her husband who likes kitchen gadgets. And HE asked me for my recipe for English muffins!!! :flail:

I had one, then somehow, lost the cord to plug into the wall. Have no idea what happened to it (blaming my better half as he has a habit of misplacing my kitchen stuff). Kept it for over a year hoping the cord would reappear. Never did, so I threw it out with the intent of getting a new griddle. Not like they are that expensive, and they always are on sale too.

Here it is now gosh, 2 years later? Maybe 3? Never replaced it. I realized, we practically never eat anything that gets cooked on a griddle that can't be made on something else, most especially, a large cast iron pan. I personally don't care for pancakes (much prefer waffles and we have a good waffle iron).

I also realized I rarely used it for any other reason. I still contemplate a new one but then come back down to earth. I have no need, and no room for it.

No I don't have one. I don't need one. I usually use a skillet. We had one when I was a kid. My little brother pulled it down on himself and ended up in the ER with some nasty burns. I don't trust Sophie around one for the same reason. :frown:

I don't have one. Anything that needs to be cooked on a flat surface can be done in a cast iron skillet. I have 3 of those - small, medium, large. I have a gas stove so the temp can be controlled easily. I am not a big fan of having a different appliance for everything that is cooked.

I have this too. The waffle maker part doesn't work well anymore.l No matter what I do, it seems the waffles will stick. So I am only using it for pancakes. We use just a flat grill with a handle on it to make grilled sandwiches most everyday for lunch. That is why I am thinking of buying the Power Smokeless Indoor Grill. If I do, I can get rid of the waffle maker/griddle, the flat griddle for the stove and the George Foreman grill I use for pork chops, chicken etc. when we don't grill outside.

We have an electric one. Technically it's DH's kitchen gadget. He is the pancake maker in our house. It's nice to be able to cook quite a few at once that way!

Even using a cast iron skillet, it does not heat all that evenly. And I'm lucky to get five English muffins in there at one time. And the rest of the muffins have to wait. My sourdough recipe makes 18 muffins, so it can be a long wait. Maybe four pancakes....maybe. I have a good waffle iron that I'm really happy with; it is just a waffle iron, though. I can't do anything else with it.

I think Cook's Illustrated did a review on griddles. Have to see if I can find it.

Thanks!
