It looks like my kitty has an ear polyp and will be visiting her doctor this weekend. She's almost 16 and I don't like the idea of surgery. Does anyone know of a good natural remedy that would 'dissolve' the polyp?

Thank you!

One of our cats, who passed away about 7-8 years ago, had ear polyps. She was over 19 years old when she passed. We (both us and the vet) didn't feel she should undergo surgery and while my memory is a bit fuzzy (I've had WAY too many animals with WAY too many health problems over the last 10 years...), but if I remember correctly, I think the polyps were in a difficult location to remove and was an invasive surgery. We just treated the ear infections as they came up and until her last 6-8 months with us, they were not frequent.

To my knowledge, but again, it's been a few years since we've had to deal with this, there is no way to treat the polyp to make it "dissolve".

Hi. I don't know much about ear polyps or anything to dissolve them. But, once you know more about the specific location and condition of the polyp, the vet will have more advice to give you. And, please ask about pain meds if by chance she should need them. I am not sure about all polyps, but I do know some can be painful.

There is a previous thread on this subject; it is older, and actually runs from 2007 to 2015 - however the information you might most want to read starts with a 9/30/2014 post which isn't too far down in the thread. While not all the information is pleasant (so beware) maybe there is some information in there that would help you with questions you might want to talk to the vet about?

The only cure for a polyp is surgical removal. Now, depending on the exact position of the polyp, and its size, this can be anything from very minor to a very major surgery. You vet will certainly do a FULL work up on her if he feels that the surgery would be of real benefit, including bloodwork to ensure that "all systems are go." Discuss your concerns openly and frankly. Ask about quality of life, both with and with the surgery. And always, ALWAYS, ask the most critical question of all, "If she were your cat, what would you do?"

Just got home from the doctor. My kitty does NOT have an ear polyp! I am SO happy! He looked way down her ear canals to verify. It is just a glob of wax, that he said is normal for elderly cats. Phew!!!

While there they gave her an injection of prednisone and antibiotics for her IBD.

So happy to have good news! Thank you for all your replies! :)
