Hello, I rescue strays or every once in a while an owner will drop one off on my porch. This morning i found a tote box on my front porch with a very pregnant mother. I live in upstate new york and during this snow storm i brought her inside and a couple of hours later she gave birth to 4 babys. Heres where the kicker comes in. She gave birth to them on my bed but wont let me move her into a nest i made for her. ive had cats who have given birth before so this isnt new to me but she keeps them covered with a blanket. Now my house isnt cold at all but im afraid that they will over heat. is this normal for a mother. she looks like shes had babies before but ive never seen this. She also will freak out if i leave the room for more than a an hour. i Dont have to be next to her just in the room.
Thank you so much
Kat the cat lady :p

She is in a strange place and has babies to protect while she is recovering from their birth. I think she is covering them to hide them and keep them safe. She sees you as protection for all of them. Really not sure what to suggest other than spend as much time as you are able in the room with her...can you sleep in the room even if not on the bed?

:welcomesign: Welcome to the TCS family, Kat & new kitty family! You are an answer to prayers, taking in that poor mother cat. I can't begin to imagine how traumatic it was for her to give birth in a strange, although safe, territory. It is a high honor that she trusts you so completely that she wants you nearby as well as chose ON the bed instead of under it :salute: :catlove:
Can you try moving the nest into the closet and add some of your clothing? Otherwise, maybe give her a box on or next to the bed with the nest in it. I doubt that the kittens would overheat because they need a room temperature of around 90°. The skin on their tummies flushes red when they are too hot.
As for her insecurities, perhaps a pheromone spray or calming essence would help. I wonder what her story is - I have heard of parents taking away the kids' pregnant cat, dumping her off & telling them that she got out and ran away. I hate to think of a child crying over their lost kitty, worrying about her being lost in the terrible storm. At least, WE know that she is safe with you tonight :clapcat: :heartshape::bouquet::banana1::jive:
By the way....we LOVE pics :camera:
