Before he passed, Clyde would sometimes bite my microfiber blanket and knead. It looked like he was trying to hump it almost. My other cats knead them and are obsessed with sleeping on them. Blackie meows, 'sings' to it, kneads, bites, and gets excited. She does this at least twice a day. All of my cats are fixed.

Has anyone else found their cats obsessed with blankets like this? The new blanket is a horrible trigger for Blackie. Are there theories or such as to why this is?

If it's a sex thing I feel like I ought to hide all my blankets...

Haha! Too funny. But, seriously, I don't think it is a 'sex' thing! None of my cats have ever done this. However, there have been a couple of other threads about kittens and cats suckling on blankets - some of them for a life time!

I am sure those members will see your post soon and share some of their stories about their cats and their beloved blankets!

It’s not a sex thing, it is a mom thing. Something about the softness and fuzziness of fleece reminds them of nuzzling or nursing from mom and they do the same with the fleece. Totally harmless and very calming/comforting for them.

And it isn’t only fleece. Woolens, real or artificial fur, soft knits and any other kind of soft plush fabric will get them kneading as well.

"Why did you take my bed away?"
I'm sure she misses it very much. Chewy sent me a 40inch dog bed instead of a scratcher. Too big for my apt

Sir is obsessed with soft fabrics. The softer and plushier the better. He will literally faceplant FLAT into it and sit there purring. We've actually used this to our advantage in my house. When we don't want him somewhere we'll put a berber fleece throw in the doorway. When he walks across he'll get trapped kneading it.

Every fleece blanket in the house belonged to our last cat, in his opinion. It didn't matter how many we had - a lot! I was permitted to use them, but if my husband tried to, there was much complaining on Jamie's part.

Mowgli loves to knead them.

If it's a mom thing, how come my males would also do it? Blackie got fixed before she became a mama. Whatever it is, it's funny as heck!

To add to what's already been said, some cats enjoys the fabrics that are full of static, and microfiber often is, so maybe this causes their excitement.

Petting Sweet Gum right now produces green static. Anyone else see colors with it?

Homer loves the fleece and microfiber stuff. He kneads it to death. I was covering my lap with one that has a fake lambs wool side and he was between my feet, and doing something weird, I thought he was eating it! But no, he was just sucking it. Nothing weird here...

Check the blankets to be sure they aren't eating them. If they are you'll find little squares missing from the blanket. If they are you'll need to watch for the re-appearance of the blanket. Eating blankets and other wool objects is a Siamese thing, but others will give it a whirl.

Yes, he has chewed holes in the afghan. But I checked the fleece closely, and doesn't seem to be missing anything : )
