Any tips on how to follow a DVD when you're laying on a yoga mat and can't quite see the tv without stopping what you're trying to do.
I recommend starting with a shorter session, 20 or 30 minutes, and watching it first so you know what the instructor is going to do. Sun Salutations are fairly standard in most forms of yoga and yoga practices, so it's a good idea to know how to do those.

In fact, if I don't have time for a full yoga practice I do 5 or 10 of these as they stretch and strengthen your whole body.

It takes a long time to get your movements in synch with your breathing and to be able to get into a pose as well as an instructor on a video, but don't let that put you off. You'll be getting all the benefits of the pose from practicing at the level your body is at right now.

The breathing is the important part. Don't worry about making the pose look like it does on the video. Focus on taking deep breaths and modify the poses so they're comfortable for you.

The idea is to make the poses fit your body, not make your body fit into the pose.

I did a 45 minute cardio flow today. I needed something to warm me up.

I went for a 14 minute walk outside yesterday, and it was cold !!!! but that's 2 days in a row. My Fitbit steps was still under 7000 for the day. :( I think maybe it doesn't count all my normal steps around the house. :sigh:

Thanks Norachan Norachan for the Yoga tips. I never thought about watching the video first, but that makes sense. I found this short video on Sun Salutations that looks pretty good. Maybe I'll give it a try later today.

That looks like a good video rubysmama rubysmama I like the way she gives you the option to put your knees on the floor if you get tired. Holding Down Dog is a great way to improve your upper body strength, but it can be hard on your arms at first.

When I first started yoga one of my teachers told the class, "Yoga is not a competition. You're not competing with yourself or anyone else."

At the time I thought,

"What's he talking about? Of course it's a competition. Everything is a competition!"

You do make a lot more progress if you go slowly though. Give it around 75% rather that 100% and take a rest whenever you need to.

One of the best resting poses is Child's Pose, which actually stretches your lower back and hips while you rest.

I did an hour of yoga and walked for 90 minutes yesterday. That was my longest walk for a while, but I think I overdid it a bit. My toe was a bit sore after that.

Today I just did a 20 minute walk, supermarket to post office and back, and about 45 minutes yoga.

AbbysMom AbbysMom Congrats on the Fitbit! Did you get a treadmill?

Monday -
20,157 steps for the day = 10.45 miles
30 floors
118 active minutes

And my resting heart rate dropped back down to 56. Whew! I think part of the higher heart rate was that I didn't walk much the other week and part of it was I had that bad cold/flu/whatever bug. As I get better, it should get lower.

Has anyone tried Yoga with Adrienne before? I just started her program today, even though technically she started her 30 day Yoga Program on the 2nd of this month. I like her. She's really gentle.

I had quit doing yoga regularly around the end of September of last year due to bad eating habits catching up with me (zero energy, tummy troubles, too much weight). Thankfully, now I'm back to my old self.

So for today I did 50 mins of yoga and then I super cleaned for about an hour and a half. Because of the non-stop go I skipped my treadmill routine but I'll do that first thing tomorrow morning. I'm hoping that working out will also curb my need for naps and take care of my brain fog issue.

Winchester Winchester , you are so so inspiring btw.

I seem to have a serious case of the winter blahs, and can't get motivated to do much of anything. So yoga hasn't happened yet. :(

Happy to know I have a good video to start with.

If I ever get started, I would look into trying her videos someday.

Today is warmer out, so may try to go for a walk. :walk:

I'll be so glad when spring gets here. :sigh:

Aw thanks dalpaengi dalpaengi I'm so glad you've joined us!

Tuesday -
20,335 steps for the day = 10.6 miles
30 floors
128 active minutes

It's gotten considerably colder in central PA. Really windy, too. Not a lot of snow, but listening to our local weather-weenies, that's about to change this weekend.

But Norachan Norachan , I've not mentioned Belize yet!

Yes, I've done a few of her videos. My favourite teacher at the moment is Michelle Goldstein.

Turn the heat up, have a warm bath with some nice oils in to relax you, light a scented candle and take it from there. You feel more like doing yoga if you're warm and comfortable and you've set the room up for it.

If you go I'm coming with you!

It's cold here too. I did an hour of yoga yesterday and managed to get into Grass Hopper Pose.

Took a lot of determination to get my butt off the floor, but I got there in the end.

I'm curious about fitbits but not ready to buy one just yet. I'd like to see what it picks up for my sleep cycles.

I've been getting time on the elliptical most every day. I'm up to 30 minutes without being too exhausted from it. DH taught me to use the Bowflex last weekend so I'm starting to do that 3 days a week. It's been fun so far. Even if it is in our garage in the winter. I didn't notice once I got going. :p I liked lifting in high school and built muscle pretty easy back then so I'm hoping that will help me lose more weight. I've heard lifting can help burn fat faster anyway. I have quite a bit to lose but right now I'm just aiming for consistency instead of numbers. Eventually I might start measuring too.

Ya'll who can do videos get a big :clap2: from me. I've tried. I'm not traditionally coordinated. When I tried to learn to country line dance I kicked a few people and sat down. So yep; videos are a struggle! Although I did ok with one beginner pilates videos years ago. ;)

MoochNNoodles MoochNNoodles We have a Bowflex in the basement. I really liked working out with it, but got away from it and it's been hard for me to get back into the routine. Once I'm doing it, I'm fine; it's just getting started. When I'm on the treadmill in the morning, I look over at it and think, "You know, you really need to get off your duff, Pam!" I always liked it; Rick not so much. He prefers free weights.

Wednesday -
20,462 steps for the day = 10.87 miles
33 floors
Not sure of my active minutes for Wednesday (I forgot to bring my phone to work and it doesn't show up on my Dashboard; I can only find today's total.)

A little bummed out since sadly, I had to quit Adrienne's 30 day dedicate program. It's going to be too hard for me to stick with it every day with my upcoming work schedule. I think I can only manage about 3 days out of the week for yoga/elliptical and the rest of the days need to be about whatever gym workouts my trainer wants me to do. I'll still follow her videos every day since there are short programs.

Norachan Norachan , I'm going to have to try that yoga program you linked to. Maybe that would be a good fit for me too. I'm glad you've also done Adrienne's workouts too.
The advice you shared about working out to yoga dvd's is so useful. I'll cheer up about my fail soon.

MoochNNoodles MoochNNoodles , that's a good idea. The new fitbit seems to track all sorts of things and the company seems to have developed the fitbit more than some of the earlier releases. I'm saving up for a fitbit versa as a reward if I consistently do my workouts until March.

Thursday -
20,504 steps for the day = 10.69 miles
30 floors
122 active minutes

That got me over 100,000 steps for this week.

127 - my active minutes for Wednesday, checked on my phone this morning

I won't do well today. Rick brought me into work this morning because we want to run our normal Saturday morning errands tonight before the snow starts in tomorrow. I got 2 miles in this morning, but then had to stop and get ready earlier for work.

That sounds lovely. But not sure I'd want to go and ruin that feeling with exercise! :D

I think each new Fitbit is a bit better than the one before. I like mine (Charge 2) though as I've mentioned before, it's not totally accurate. The sleep cycle info is interesting though, and I was surprised at how little of my night is in deep sleep.

Sounds like you may have some exercise in the form of shoveling over the weekend. :(

rubysmama rubysmama , you're right. I was putting way too much on my plate! I think I have that personality type that wants to do everything but moreso out of guilt than just because I enjoy the process or the added health benefits. With Adrienne, I felt like I was suppose to do things in perfect order too, on the same level as her, when really I should do whatever I want at my pace. Whew wee. I gotta go easier on myself this year.

I like the idea of using a Fitbit as a reward for staying consistent. :agree: I notice the heart rate monitor on the elliptical is off. Or maybe I was just gripping it wrong. It was something super odd and low the other day. :dunno:

I am seeing some progress for myself. It may not be noticeable to anyone else but my waist is a bit trimmer and I am down several pounds. Thank the Lord. I made it to 30 minutes on the elliptical today without being too tired afterwards and if I lift tomorrow that will be 3 days this week. I do like the Bowflex. We also have a Total Gym and that is ok for a few exercises; but I don't care for it. I told DH at my weight I've got build in resistance and I don't like laying with my head below my feet. Our kids think it's fun to play on of course. The Bowflex is more my style I guess.

That's OK! You don't have to do it every day if you don't have time. Just once a week is 100% better than no times a week, right?

That sounds lovely. But not sure I'd want to go and ruin that feeling with exercise!
:spew:Well, I guess you could always go and take a nap instead. Also a good way to make yourself feel wonderful

I do like the Bowflex.
Just had to Google that, I've never seen one before. It looks like fun.

It's amazing that you've lost a few pounds already.

:goldstar:

I did 45 minutes yoga today, and about an hour of very energetic cleaning.

I'm not a big fan of exercise, as I'm sure is obvious from reading my posts. :ohwell:

It's here, but it needs to be assembled.

I normally do have curtains. We had new windows put in recently and I am most likely going to buy new curtains, etc.

My steps have been all over the place. I've had days where I have had to babysit the workers and I've barely gotten 3,000 steps in and other days where I have either been getting ready for workers or cleaning up after them that I have gotten plenty of steps in.
