I'm sure most of you are fluent in Meow, I think I'm pretty fluent in Meow:

"I am hungry" meow
"I want attention" meow
"I'm bored" meow
"I see cockroach" meow/chirp
"I see birds outside the window" chirp
"I hate bathtime" meow
"Human stepped on me" ouchie meow
The "Meow?" whenever I can't find her and call her name
"I am trapped please come save me" Meow
"The Bathroom is dangerous please come out now" Meow

But every now and then she runs into my room and does a meow/howl and I cannot figure out what she's trying to say. I feel like she's desperately trying to tell me something but I just can't figure out what.

Did you guys have a Meow you couldn't understand and did you figure it out in the end?

Hi!
I love the bathroom is dangerous meow LOL

Do you live in an apartment? I would wonder if she's trying to tell you about other animals, or even if you're in a house - that are in the vicinity :)

I think I heard one of those types of meows last night actually - he was at the screen door, and I heard the oddest sound and finally figured out it was him. I can only assume there was a feral in the yard, or maybe it was one of the neighborhood raccoons passing through.

Oh, you missed one - the I feel absolutely AWFUL yowl (which doesn't do that sound justice at all - I swear he sounds like a Siamese) right before he upchucks something that isn't sitting well in his tummy :sickcat:

Leo which passed away recently used to give normal meows when greeting, but if i was doing something different like playing with a phone, he would walk up to me while saying Rikow, arikow , Ri Kow in a high pitched voice and then push his head into my hand to knock the object in my hand. It was like his way of saying "Hey what are you doing, whats that, or stop wasting your time with that ?

The only times my Bourbon meows is when she is complaining (particularly when we give her the meds), or, when there is fried fish on the table (the meow would be more like sweet music).

Other times when she wants her litterbox to be cleaned, she'd sit in front of me, make eye to eye contact, then run to her litterbox. I have to figure that out. No meow.

When she is hungry, she repeatedly tramples on my stomach or swat my face. I have to figure that out. No meow.

Hahahaha the bathroom is dangerous meow...mine don't know the meaning of that one, must be a regional dialect
There is also a meow/yowl: "Look what I have hunted and slayed, here it is in my mouth (or possibly dropped off on the front stoop, but mine stay inside), I shall sustain the family, be grateful and give much praise!"

What a fun thread! You forgot the "Let me outside!" meow. Also, my cat has developed a subversion of the "I am hungry" meow: "Turn on the water!" It's a bit of a garbled mew moo type sound because it involves licking the faucet while meowing.

You said 'every now and then"... is there a pattern? Does it happen during dawn/dusk?

Cats are crepuscular which means they hunt during dawn/dusk.

This behaviour is often labeled by people as their cats 'seeing ghosts'. It's just their brains telling them it's time to hunt.

Honeybun rarely meows.. shes such an um... different kind of kitty. She trills a lot. Prrrrrrt? Prrrrt! My fave is when i let her in the garage to run around. Shes only allowed in there sometimes, and then only for like an hour. When its time for her to come back i shake the treat box, but if that doesnt work i have to ho catch her. Theres things out there she can hide behind where i cant reach her. So ill go out there, see her over by the bike, ill try to be quiet and casual as i slowly get closer to her so i can pick her up....but as soon as im within a foot she trills BRRRRRRRRRRRFT! Really loufd and hotfoots behind sonething where i cant get her. Ill walk away and pretend to do something else, she'lll come out, ill approach slowly, be almost close enought. To pick her up-

BRRRRT BRRRRRRRT! and she skeedaddles behind something.

I dont know whether to be annoyed or laugh, so i usually do both

Omg this is so cute, I can totally picture it!!

Piccolo trills too, a little tiny baby trill that I hope never goes away because it is the funniest, cutest little noise ever...she is only about 5 months old, so idk if she will always have a baby voice or if that will change. He mama Jade is also big on trilling, she almost entirely talked to her babies in trill :)

Funny how we all mastered the art and comprehension of meowing and non-meowing (or face swatting). All for the love of our cats.
