I want to know if anyone has used diapers on a female cat and if so was it successful. Stella is 13 years old and diabetic; she is under the care of her vet and takes insulin twice a day. However, she is very heavy, about 19 lbs, and has some neuropathy. She can walk, in fact she can cover ground when she wants to, but cannot use a litter box under any circumstances. She is indoor only, now confined to a large room with floor to ceiling windows and two large polyester quilts to sleep in. The room has a vinyl floor; the rest of the house is hardwood and she just could not be left to roam at will. Food, water, fountain, grass are all available in the room. She is a very sweet cat, a street rescue who ran out from under a car as a small kitten to beg for food.

However, the incontinence, both types, is getting hard to manage. I bathe her bottom region and do laundry several times a week for her, partly because the smell becomes bad, and also to assure some quality of life for her. The only thing I can think of beside what I am doing now is to use diapers. I noticed that some were disposable, some were washable with liners or not, and I wondered which way to go with this.

Are you working on trying to get her weight down? That may help, plus help her other issues. A canned only diet will help. I hope she is already on a canned only diet if she is diabetic. But if not definitely talk to your vet about that transition.

since HK is getting stiff, we use an extra large dog kennel tray instead of a litter box and put dr elsey's cat litter on it. the lip is at most an inch tall, so he has no trouble with it except sometimes when he doesn't make it to the tray...

Thank you all so much. Stella is on the special diabetic diet and everything that can be done for her is being done. We went through a long phase of doggy pee pads as all my dogs have been trained to use them. As she soiled one, she moved away, I would put one in the new spot, then she moved from that, eventually we had them all over the house. She does leak and that has probably defeated the litter box use even when she was more mobile. I am going to look into the diapers.

Today when Stella went to the vet for her senior panel, fructosamine, urine test etc I asked about diapers and the vet did not think it was a good idea because she would possibly get urine burn, bladder infections, etc. So that ended it. Thank you for all your input though.
