I am so jealous! I have 3 1/2 YEARS left. Enjoy! I am guessing that you are not going to go start a winery or anything?

Congratulations! I’ve been retired four years this month and love it...except...the cats are still on the job, getting Mom up at 5:30.

No party for me. I am not a partier. In fact I am sort of dreading the last day because I know the store manager is going to embarrass me in the morning meeting. She always points out any event such as birthdays, retirements and so on. My customers are being so sweet - one even brought me cookies as a combo Christmas/retirement gift.

I wonder what age/years of service people do retire in US.

Over here they are moving upwards constantly, and the retirement age always slips out our hands!
I could have retired in a year, but they changed the rules so many times, and now it seems I have 14 years more...!

I get not wanting a party, but don't dread your last day, and do try to enjoy being the center of attention for those those few minutes. :celebrate:

Where I work, we need 20 years of service in order to enjoy a full retirement. I'll have my 20 years in in June 2019. The following January, 2020, I'll be 65. At that point, I'm done. My goal is to leave for the Christmas 2019 holiday and not come back. I can use accrued vacation time to get me to January 2020.

That means that I have one year left!

I know Congress keeps talking about increasing the retirement age to 70. I don't care; not going there. NOT!

My husband's company goes by years of service. It's a pretty physical job so people are ready to retire there. Most seem to go on to another job for a few years before actual retirement.

My Aunt just retired and later my Dad said if she'd stayed for 3 more months she would get more from her social security. I don't know exactly how that works these days. But nursing in a hospital for 40 years good gosh she deserves her retirement. My Dad is counting down by months. His company laid him off in August (location closed) and he was saying "33 months...I just want 33 more months..." Thankfully he was immediately hired by another company because hes always afraid his age makes him less employable. Nevermind hes very good at what he does.

DH told me one of his clients just retired at 86. 86!! I think he is either a plumber or electrician. Something like that. He told DH his son (also one of DH's clients) ran him out of business.

Rick was going to retire in May of 2018. Then it became July 2018. He's still working. He is a man who needs structure and organization in his life and I think he's a little worried about retirement. We're going to Louisiana for two weeks next May and now he's talking about not going back into work when we come back home. We'll see how that goes. He'll be 68 by then.

I know he would like me to continue working until I'm 67 (I think that's full SS bennies at that point). No. Just no. I think I'm ready. Nothing is set in stone; things happen and plans sometimes have to change. And maybe by the time I turn 65, I'll change my mind.

Maybe he can do like my other Aunt; find a part time job that is not too stressful but keeps him busy/stimulated. She retired a few years ago because it was either that or take a promotion she didn't want. But then she was bored. So she works a few hours a week at a small local airport. I don't even know doing what. My Mom is still a few years from that; but I don't see her sitting still well either. She already moved from a "career" position into something that is less stressful.
