We came from the vet yesterday for her annual rabies and vaccination shots, and from then on she seemed to have lost appetite. All she has been doing is lay down and sleep. This morning I had to hand-feed her. She ate just a little and went back to sleep. I also noticed that she has not groomed herself since coming from the vet. Is this normal reaction by cats?

They can be a little "off" after vaccines. This might be a bit long. I don't know what time it is there but if it is still going on this afternoon I would call the vet, if its evening, watch her in the morning....

Some cats react to the vaccinations and become lethargic for a day or so. She should be back to her normal self by tonight or tomorrow. If not, give your vet a call.
I do hope so she comes about tonight max, as tomorrow all vet clinics are closed from where I am. :(

I certainly pray so. We are in the Mid East and tomorrow all vet clinics are closed. I hope she gets better by tonight. This isn't her first time with the shots, but I don't remember her having the same reactions last time.

Did the vet used the same brand of vaccines as the times before?
Was your kitty fine when she received the shots? I mean, did the vet check her before the shots? Sometimes kitties have a hidden sickness and they seem to be fine.

My cat had a bad reaction to a vaccine many years ago, she threw up all day and night!
The brand of the vaccine wasn't the same as the times before, and I let the vet know that.

Yes it's the same brand. I hope when I get home today from work she would be fine by then. I hand-fed her this morning, and she tried her best but only ate a little. I called the vet this morning and was advised to just monitor my cat and let him know immediately if things get worse. I am uneasy at work and is dying to get home.

I guess you have nobody that can just hop in your home for a while and check on your kitty.
I know how you're feeling now, I'd be shaking in your situation. But I'm sure it is just a temporary condition.

I have had several cats have that same reaction. The vet administered Benadryl before the next ones and he was fine. I know some people say that doesn't work with these vaccinations, but it sure worked with his. My Casper slept all day the first day and was much slower the second. But he was fine by the third day. Make sure your little one is drinking it helps to distribute the medications and gets them through the system faster. As long as there is any improvement at all, that is good, and it should continue. Entice your little girl with whatever she will eat right now, bacon, tuna, deli shaved turkey, a full stomach will help her to feel better. all the luck !

It's normal for cats to be sleep for a day or two after getting both rabies shots and FVRCP done at the same time. I wouldn't worry about it. Keep an eye on the appetite and litter box use. Do call the vet as soon as the office opens and just let the vet know.

Sinbad gets horribly ill after his shots, and spends 3-5 days shaking, unable to eat and miserable. The vet told me this is not exactly normal, but not uncommon. I just spend time with him, and feed him very watered down food for him to lick up as he can. Now she does what they call titers, to test to see if there is enough of the vaccination in his system to pass legal amounts and only gives him the shots when needed.

I never knew you could do that. Can any cat get titers done? I always felt that they got over vaccinated.

Yes but it is expensive to be doing every year or whatever. I would try Benedryl first and if the reaction is the same then think about it.

She still is not the same, although she has already eaten. Still she refuses to be touched and spent most of her day today just sleeping. ☹
It is really true that some cats react more strongly than others to the vaccines. So far I don't think it is cause for concern, except to monitor her to ensure she is drinking and eating even a little and using her box if she needs to. losna losna 's Sinbad sounds like he has a pronounced reaction to the vaccines.

Yeah, it makes him really sick, poor little guy.

Our vet is really great, she goes to battle against our town every year on his behalf. They want rabies shots every year and don't accept titers. Every year when it's time for licensing renewals (our town requires special permits to have 3 or more cats for some weird reason) she tells them a yearly shot puts his health at risk and since the titer proves his antibodies meet the legal requirements, the town council can bugger off.

WOW, losna losna . The municipal policy SUCKS. I've seen that other places, too. Here, there is a limit of 6 cats but if your cats are well cared for and indoors only, who's to know? ;) Annual rabies vax are absolutely unnecessary according to experts in the know. Good on your vet. And best to your Sinbad :catlove:
