im planning to wash the cat bed that my Simon has spent the better part of three weeks sneezing on (he’s just getting over an Upper Respiratory Infection)

I can always get pet safe detergent if necessary, but here are three different ones I currently have on hand - will any of them work?

  • All liquid detergent, baby formula
  • Purée liquid detergent, fresh lavender blossom scent
  • Gain Pods

Yes definitely use an unscented detergent. If you don’t have one you can just add some vinegar to the wash water which won’t leave a scent.

Unscented is definitely the way to go. Also be sure it doesn't have fabric softener in it (fabric softener is not good for cats.)

I use soap nuts for all of my laundry. Can't get anymore natural and they REALLY work! They even act as a natural softener. I've never enjoyed any laundry detergent as much as I enjoy these things. No joke.
I make mine as a "tea" because I hand wash all my laundry, so it's just a lot easier that way. But machine washing you just put the little nuts in the muslin bag that's included and wash away .

I add lavender and geranium oil to the "tea" I make for my own laundry but that's just 'cos I like scents. For Boyfie's laundry and kitty blankets, I don't add scent.

:)

I am having an allergy to Arm & Hammer, even the non-allergic one.

I have tried the non-allergic All; but finding that is does not really clean the stains all that well.

I like the non-allergic Tide--white bottle. It cleans really well, unscented..

I would use either one of them for Cat stuff.
If it is gentle enough for allergenic people, it should be good enough for animals.. I go by my reactions to things...

unscented is the way to go... and if you need a bit of softener for the dryer, I would use Downy in the white bottle.. It is unscented.. works well. Just take a washcloth, wet it, pour some Downy on it... to cut down on static...

I use unscented detergent for all of my own laundry. For the cat beds and blankets I use the same thing, just wash in hot water and do a double rinse. It works well for the most part. If I have something that's really stinky I'll pour some Advanage Cleaner (clear) on the stinky part before I put it in the wash. The product doesn't advertise that it gets rid of pets odors, but it works better than anything else I've tried.

After the washer goes through it's full cycle and stops I put several glubs of white vinegar from the 1/2 gallon jug into the machine then run another rinse cycle. That helps get the last of the soap out of the clothes, bedding etc. If you have hard water you'll want to use more vinegar.
