I’m extremely sad. My cat who has kidney issues was on Rad Cat because of the low phosphorus. I make homemade raw for my other cats but I follow the feline nutrition recipe with bone. How do I alter the recipe to make sure it is low in phosphorus (but not too low?). Do I just use eggshell instead of bone?

Any help appreciated. :bawling::bawling:

Hi! This is shocking, distressing, and I feel so badly for the company and for their customers!

For those of you who need this information in a general sense;

I took this from radcat's website (edited to avoid search engine issues); the closest to our products will be if you purchase whole meats and make it yourself. Some good recipes out there for example are www.Feline-nutrition.org. There's a premix such as www.foodfurlife.com
Instincts TC and Better in the Raw for Cats as well. Exotic and hypoallergenic meats like venison, lamb, rabbit and goat, with organ meat available, can be purchased online.

@orange&white amysuen amysuen @lalagimp if you have a few moments, would it be possible that you could help the OP with the specifics of lowering phosphorus?

Not using bone will go a long ways towards lowering the phosphorus. I can help you develop a low phosphorus food for your cat that will still meet AAFCO nutrient recommendations as Rad Cat does, or that closely matches the feline nutrition recipe if you prefer, using an alternative calcium source. Just PM me.

Thanks everyone! I’m aiming for about .80 on a dry matter basis. She’s early stages CKD and my vet said we shouldn’t go lower than that at this point. She knew that I had her on Rad Cat and thought it was a great diet for her.

Thank you mschauer mschauer ! I PM’ed you!

We've been doing Purina Pro Plan Urinary Tract Health for Snickers and the only times he's started to have issues is when I've been lazy and fed him the dry version instead of canned. (Long story short, he only eats 1/2 small can at a time and someone has to watch him or one of the other cats will push him away and eat his food.) Usually the dry is only to sprinkle on the canned to get him interested in eating.

For the other cats I make Feline Nutrition with bone and would love to know how to make low phosphorus for Snickers. ( mschauer mschauer )

The directory below contains a few of my raw recipes with nutrient analysis:
Raw Recipes - Google Drive

The chicken, pork and turkey all meet Azazel's requirement of phosphorous lower than .80. Is that also low enough for you?

The Alnutrin pre-mix will also make a relatively low phosphorus feed if you don't want to mess with finding individual supplements:
RecipeBasicnonmetric.xls

I'm going to look at the feline nutrition recipe this evening when I get home. I'll post here again after I have a recipe more similar to it to share.

Not sure. Their website doesn't list phosphorus but according to Chewy.com the chicken version has .20 and according to catinfo.com the chicken version has .58.

Maybe we don't want low phosphorus?? The vet told us to put him on Royal Canin SO or Hill's Science Diet s/d to prevent crystals from forming in his urine. This was over a year ago so I don't remember what in the food was supposed to do that. I made a chart comparing those with the Purina Pro Urinary and they seemed similar enough. We went with Purina because it was cheaper and we could get it at pet stores instead of the vet.

I don't know what feed you are referring to here. Purina Pro Plan Urinary Tract Health is 0.60% phosphorus. Is that what you are referring to?

It would be difficult to get a home-made diet that low in phosphorus. When one of my cats had urinary tract issues (struvite crystals), all I had to do was switch here to a raw diet and no more problem.

Yes, Purina ProPlan Focus Urinary Tract Health.

I'd like to switch to raw but our oldest kitty pukes up anything raw. She's also super skittish and will run away if there's any sudden noise or movement while she's eating so I want to make sure that anything she gets down stays there. ;)

PS- The Purina ProPlan was supposed to be temporary, until our daughter graduated from college and moved out with her cat. But that's another story...

I've added the Feline Nutrition recipe to my Google Drive directory in a file called FelineNutritionChickenwEggshell.pdf :

The recipe on the web site calls for "200 mg B-Complex". It isn't clear what they mean by that. I thought they meant 200 mg of the contents of the capsules but in the picture it looks like they used 2 capsules. That would be a lot. In my analysis 1 capsule of the NOW B-50 product was plenty so that is what I used.

mschauer mschauer really good advice there!!!!!
We had a dog with some kidney issues and the vet knew we fed raw, and their first line of advice was lower bone content as it's high in phos.
A Azazel I hope you find recipes that suit your little guys needs. I'm really bummed Radcat is going out of business, they are/were a really good company with a good product that IMO was thrown under the bus.

Hi. I am not sure if anyone replied with this - but I think the food is called My Perfect Pet. They make a low phosphorus food for cats. All the best to you.

Thanks everyone for all your suggestions.

I guess I posted this thread in a panic right after I found out that Rad Cat was going out of business and I really appreciate everyone's responses! I hope this thread helps someone else in the same situation too.

An update on my situation: I've stocked up on about 7 months of Rad Cat and my vet is going to create a tailored raw homemade recipe for me. I was so panicked that I completely forgot that my vet consults on homemade diets. :doh: This will be the best route for me to take since we can get some bloodwork done again in a few months and then assess the best way to go about preparing a diet for her.
