hello!
So I adopted a cat in July that is 3 years old. She has a history of bladder stones and is on Royal Canin urinary SO dry food. Due to some unexpected events, we may run out of the food before we receive another bag. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on food to give her until the new food gets here. I understood that wet foods are better for urinary issues due to the water content. Will a wet food be alright for a few days? I also saw that Walmart carries a hills science diet urinary food. Would this be any better?

From experience, I can tell you that in these cases, urinary formulated dry food is better than non-urinary formulated wet. Purina makes one that you can find in a pinch in most grocers (it will say urinary tract health on the bag, red/blue bag). As for the Hill's C/D, I cannot say one is better than the other (my boy has been on both), but the c/d will certainly be okay while you are waiting for his other food to arrive. I will opt for the dry since he is used to kibble. My boy won't touch C/D wet, but of course every kitty is different. Mine is on RC S/O, too (moderate calorie).

i have seen a urinary wet food, i think its Purina pro plan, and i think the science diet too, at our local petsense. They dont carry a lot of cat food, but i saw that one. Or any local vet will often carry food you can buy locally to get you through till you get your normal supply?

I agree with sweetblackpaws sweetblackpaws .

I use Royal Canin SO and Hill's C/D (both canned and dry) since Feeby had bladder stones so bad she needed surgery (8 years ago). She has been pretty much stone free since then. I don't know what the difference is between the Hills you are seeing in Walmart and the Hills I use, but you could at least compare the ingredients in the one at Walmart with what is in your Royal Canin SO and see if they are at least comparable. If the Walmart Hills is canned, it might be a bit harder to compare ingredients.

FYI - I use both dry and canned because Feeby is a grazer - meaning she eats a very little bit at a time, on and off, all day. So, she prefers the dry. But, I give her canned too, just for the added moisture. However, that is a bit of a chore because it's hard to get her to eat even 1/3 of a can in less than 2-3 hours.
