Hi all, my kitten was spayed on October 5 and she has had a cone around her head since then. She was very sleepy the first four days but has since then bounced back to her normal self. She wants to play, is eating lots, and going to the bathroom without issue. However it's her incision I am worried about. There seems to be alot of scabbing and slight discharge. There is no odor to it and it doesn't feel warm to touch. The pictures attached document 4 days post operation which just shows the glue left on the incision and no scabbing. The picture with my ring in it is oct 11th, and third photo is today oct 13th. So you can see how it has progressed. I'm not sure if the scabbing is due to her moving more and jumping onto the couches/walking down the stairs and what not? We've lightly patted the incision with peroxide on a cotton swab and nothing transfers from the incision to the cotton. Is this normal for an incision to scab this much?

Hi! I hope others see your post soon and offer some assistance. It's been so long ago with Feeby's spaying that I truly don't recall. I do know there was some scabbing, but I cannot tell you for how long.

Wish I could offer better information, but I know the members here are very responsive and you will soon get some good info/advice!

There does appear to be infection on the area nearest your hand but I cant be sure from the photo. Can you send the photo to your vet for him to see. From what you have said above it sounds ok but your vet is the best person to ask if you are unsure.

I would have her back to the vet as soon as possible. If there is discharge there is an infection. The vet may need to clean up the site, and prescribe antibiotics.
It just does not look good to me. Do keep us updated on her! :crossfingers:

It doesn't look good, I agree. BUT, if you've had the cone on her all this time with no breaks, I wonder if that's just the result of 8 days with no cleaning. I would probably give her a chance to clean herself up before deciding if it's infected. Of course keep an eye on her to make sure she doesn't chew the stitches, but let her lick it. If it still looks nasty after she's cleaned it up, send a pic to the vet for a professional opinion.

Did they use glue? Sometimes the glue will look awful as it deteriorates. I’d definitely send pics to the vet and ask what they think.

Yes they did use glue, and the stitches dissolve on their own - they were on the inside is what they told me.

I will, I spoke with someone at the office and sent pictures. They said it actually doesn't look horrible, and to give it a few more days on it's own to heal. If by Monday there is still wetness and large scabbing to bring her in

My girl had glue on the outside as well, with stiches on the inside. Day 4 freaked me out, with calls to the vet. I’ll include a photo for comparison. Her situation ended up being fine, but it’s always worth a vet check for piece of mind.

i still say if there is discharge she should see the vet, thats my opinion anyway. I hope she gets better, and im also not sure about letting her clean the area, they can often cause a lot of damage. :dunno:

I know my vet says keep that cone on the whole time, do not let them lick or clean the area until it is healed, normally 14 days. And if Any discharge or oozing to bring them back in right away.

I am a little cautious about spay sites, my girl had so much problem, and hers never really looked all that bad either, just not right. But she had infections, reactions to the suture materials, and the site kept trying to open, so i always vote on the side of caution and a vet visit :heartshape:

I did take her in today for an emergency appointment and they cleaned the incision. They said it didnt look horrible, and prescribed her an antibiotic. However, when they did clean everything away they suggested it may be her body rejecting the sutures. We wont know for another 4 days or so to see how she reacts to antibiotics.so fingers crossed antibiotics clear everything up and it isnt something more serious. Poor little kitty

I dont see any external stitches so I presume the vet is talking about internal desolvable ones in which case they should have more or less be gone. Hopefully she will be back to normal in a day ot two.
