My OCD is flipping me out on this Tuesday morning. I visited with two friends at a public place who later told me their house has been "infested" with fleas. Their dog has been on a flea pill for at least two days but they didn't tell me until after we had finished getting together. My question: I had hugged them and one friend sat in my car talking with me for a half hour, could have I brought a flea with me back home?! I had a terrible scare with fleas the week I brought my precious baby home. I had nightmares after it happened. It was very scarring for both of us. What are the odds I brought fleas back from me from my time with them? Thankful for any answers, apologies if the question seems far-fetched or silly. :(

There is literally no way to know. Best I can suggest is pick up a flea collar and put it in your vacuum bag and vacuum your house like mad ;) Or get some flea prevention from the vet. Better yet both. You also can bring fleas in on your pant legs so if you thing about it, there is a possibility almost daily. Not to freak you out but I would hate for there to be a flea found in your home and you blame the friend without really knowing for sure.

Thank you so much, Jen! I have sprayed my car out with a flea spray and have purchased revolution from petsmart. I hate giving my baby flea vaccines because they can give seizures. The reason why my friends' dog has fleas is because it was having seizures from the flea medication they were giving him! Thank you for your kindness in replying, I appreciate it. :-)

Yes, some animals react negatively to flea medication, some have allergies even. Do you know what brand your friend used? For example, Hartz flea meds have killed pets yet it is still out there to be sold at dollar stores and Walmart. But if you go through the vet and are purchasing from a reputable source one of the name brands, and under vet supervision, there is little chance of a reaction.

What sort of medication do your friends use? Not to scare or upset you further, but I hope that they treat their dogs soon since it can lead to anemia, tapeworms, bartonellosis, and dermatitis. (My cat got bartonellosis and accidentally bit me while at the vet. I ended up with cat scratch fever.)

Have you tried a flea comb and dish soap? We have a pet spider and have to limit the types of insecticide we use because they could kill her. (A single dose on a single cat will not, but we have a lot of cats and do not want to take the chance.) We use the comb/soap method and Borax on the floors.

We have hardwood and area rugs. To treat the floors, we have to put all the cats in a room, dust the unoccupied with Borax, leave it overnight, and vacuum when we get up. Then we treat the room they were in and close it off during treatment.

Have you taken a Capstar yet?
A people is very unlikely to transfer fleas or cause a flea problem. I'm gonna say all is fine.
