Hi everyone,
so my cat is 1.5 years and she has anal prolapse but my vet said she doesnt need surgery. thats shes perfectly heathly otherwise. but she dosent clean her butt, i tried spraying water on her bum so she can start licking there but she dosent do it. i will wipe it when i see that its dirty but i cant so it all the time. so its a little annoying that her butt if dirty and she gets stuff dirty with her butt.

how can i get rid of it ? i tried the warm cloth but it doesnt seem to help when its dried and stuck to her hair, i also tried the butt pet wipes but does seem worse then a wet cloth.. we are thinking of trimming her hair around her butt but it seems impossible to do it on your own.

do you guys have any other suggestions how i can get rid of it and for her to clean herself ?

thank you :)

How bad is the prolapse? Why does the vet think no treatment is necessary?
its not bad, that's why the vet said she doesnt need surgery. before we adopted her she had a procedure done called "purse string" and it has left her with a little red skin coming out. I saw it a couple times that it goes inside but then it just comes out. we are planning on taking her to another vet.

but the thing that bothers me is that she does not clean herself.

My cat is older and likely no longer cleans her behind because of weight and arthritis. She has had multiple UTIs over the course of this past year, and the vet is convinced it's because she is not cleaning herself anymore.

So, now, daily, I use 1-2 GNC Hypoallergenic Grooming Wipes (I get them at PetSmart), and there is very little 'dirt' to clean off from day to day. She also gets some mats back there, but they are now very small, compared to before I was cleaning her daily, and usually come out on their own - I assume the wiping helps loosen and remove them. These wipes are not real wet, so there is no drying that needs to be done after using them.

Time will tell if the UTIs stop, but in the meantime, her little booty is pretty clean.

Good luck with whatever you decide to try.

hi guys. sorry for the late reply.
so we went to the other vet and i was very satisfied with our visit :) yaayy !
so the doctor said that it's not okay for her butt to be sticking out because it might dry out and bacteria and the reason she doesn't clean herself because her tongue is rough so it probably irritates the area more (i feel so stupid for not thinking of that)
and she's gonna go on antibiotics and a special diet for her anal go back inside and if it doesn't then she's gonna have a surgery done.

and i also feel so disappointed because she's our first cat and i feel like i failed her because we went to one vet who said it's okay and it took us this long to go to another one and get a different opinion :((

oh and the vet also wants to put her on dry food of royal canin which i heard it's not the best brand, and i don't really want to put her on it. but it's supposed to help her with her pooping... i don't know what i should do.

Maybe you need to call the vet and ask why, so you understand the point of this particular food?

Just FYI: My cat eats Royal Canin So and Hill's C/D - both dry and wet. She's eaten these foods for the past 8 years since her bladder surgery to remove numerous stones. She has been stone free. I'm going to stick with these foods...

Hey, don't beat yourself up! You got a second opinion and now you can go about getting things taken care of! That is what counts!!
i'm trying not to but i just feel so bad. i mean she's perfectly fine when it comes to eating and playing and everything else.

i read somewhere it's because that's the food the vets usually recommend.

Maybe after the situation is taken care of you can talk with your vet about your concerns with the food and be able to switch to something else then, or at least add in wet food :)

well he said that later on I can change it back, especially because he wasn't sure if they have wet food with that special diet and I usually feed my cat mostly wet food and give her dry food maybe once a week.

I'm sorry - at the risk of seeming overly-persistent, what specific dietary purpose was the Royal Canin recommended to treat? (For example, I was recommended certain foods for Feeby's bladder health.)

I guess I am unaware of a specific Royal Canin (especially dry food) that would be recommended to help a cat poop. Thanks for your patience!!

ugh I cannot remember what he said, I knew I should have wrote it down :( I will definitely write it down when we go to see him soon again, because for now she is having her poop tested and then we are gonna put her on the diet and antibiotics to help with the swelling and see if its going to go back on its own. and its to help her with pooping so she doesn't have to push as hard.

That's OK, sorry about driving you nuts with my curiosity. Whatever it is, if it works to help her feel/get better, it is totally worth it!

Vets favor kibble dry food more than anything else. My vet said that Royal Canin, Meow Mix, Blue, and Science Diet are good foods for my cats to eat, that raw is dangerous and even commercial freeze dry raw carry harmful bacteria for my cats. That I am just wasting money and putting them at risk to catch salmonella and listeria.

This is not true. Your vet may be overly cautious or have outdated information.
