I'm a crap song writer, but I've had "Hotel Key" by Old Dominion in my head all day, and I've been singing to the dogs and cats over and over (to the tune of the reprise), "You are just so damned cute! You are just so damned cute!"

They agree.

To the tune of "Feelings" (lyrics by Morris Albert and sung by a slew of people who should have known better)

Felines, everything is felines,
Trying to make happy the felines that I love
Cat drool rolling down on my face.
Trying to make happy the felines that I love
Felines, I’ve always loved those felines
I wish I could have more of you; but three will have to do.
Felines, wo-o-o felines,
Wo-o-o, felines snuggled in my arms.

Etc.
Tobermory Tobermory -

If I were inclined toward the wearing of hats,
I'd surely doff mine to your songs about cats.
If this were a contest, it's doubtless, indeed -
I'll admit, to your wit, I would surely concede.

With sincere apologies to Michael Brewer and Tom Shipley's One Toke Over The Line - 1CatOverTheLine - written by The Evil Snowshoe (for accompaniment by electric tuba):

I'm a-waitin' for the train that goes home, sweet Mary,
Hopin' that the train is on time; I'm
Sittin' downtown at the no-kill shelter,
One cat over the line.

I got Birmans, Burmese,
Siamese and Tonkinese,
Javanese and Balinese too;
I got Weegies and moggies
Bigger than doggies,
I've even got the Evil Snowshoe.

I buy Friskies an' Fancy
Feast by the truckload,
Kitty litter comes by rail;
I got kitties in the bedrooms
Kitties in the closet,
I've even bought some kitties by mail.

When the Great Speckled Bird comes
To call me to Judgment
I'm gonna have to tell Her I'll be late;
I gotta scoop them boxes and
Feed them foxes, an'
The kitties get their Greenies at eight.

I'm one cat over the line, sweet Mary
One cat over the line; I'm
Sittin' downtown at the no-kill shelter,
One cat over the line.
I'm just waitin' for a sale to come along at PetsMart,
Hopin' that the prices are fine, I'm
Sittin' downtown at the no-kill shelter,
One cat over the line,
One cat, One cat over the line.

To the tune of “Our House” by Crosby, Stills & Nash

I'll scratch the chair,
you eat the flowers in the vase that she bought today.
Purring on the bed for hours and hours
while she makes our cat food,
tasty meats with fishy treats for us, only for us.

Play with us now,
don’t rest your head for just five minutes, everything is good.
Such a cozy room,
the sofa’s covered with our fur and lots of strings
and plushy things with
Mousie toys for us, only for us.

Our house is a very, very, very fine house
With no dogs in the yard,
Life used to be so hard,
Now everything is easy 'cause of us
and our—La, la, la, la, la, la, la...

Our house is a very, very, very fine house with two cats in the yard,
Life used to be so hard,
Now everything is easy 'cause of us
and our—

I'll scratch the chair,
while you eat the flowers in the vase that she bought today.

Tobermory Tobermory - This wins the crown! As Howard Johnson said during the new Sheriff's arrival at Rock Ridge, "let me extend a laurel - and hearty handshake."

Given that being absolutely un-toppable, I'll just post my oldest (current) continuously-sung CatSong - five lines that I've been singing to Peanut for more than twenty-one years. It started out as, "the little orange cat," but grew as he did.

Peanut, Peanut, the big orange cat,
He's not too skinny and he's not too fat;
He's the colour of a new brass door hinge,
The perfect shade for a cat who's or–ange;
He is the big orange cat!

Tobermory Tobermory - That was simply the only cat I could find wearing a laurel wreath. Here's the big orange cat:

I wondered. I thought, perhaps, that it was a photo of Peanut when he was younger...and had a different shaped face...and had shorter fur...and was a slightly different color. Other than that, identical! Peanut—the true Peanut—looks like a cat with gravitas.

Sweet Bowl of Tuna (Sweet Home Alabama)

Sea food keep a-comin'
Carry me on to gastric distress
Herring, shrimp and the mackerel
Yeah sometimes it can make a mess
But you know I'm a cat, yes

Well I heard rock lobster is the end
Well I heard that cod was too
Well I hope no one gets offended
A cat like me just likes hers filleted, woohooo!

Sweet bowl of tuna
Makes my gray skies blue
Sweet bowl of tuna
Lord, I'm gonna devour you

In New Orleans they like their crawfish
And their Cajun oyster stew
Well I could use some blackened catfish
Won't make your stomach bother you
That's the truth

Sweet bowl of tuna
Makes my gray skies blue
Sweet bowl of tuna
Lord, I'm gonna devour you

Here I come, fishies...

Now Mom has got a big ol' salmon
And she's gonna broil it for me (yes she is)
Sprinkle on the cheese and onion
Drowned in butter it's the thing for me
Can't you see?

Sweet bowl of tuna
Makes my grey skies blue
Sweet bowl of tuna
Lord, I'm gonna devour you

Sweet bowl of tuna....

Back In The Food Bowl Again (Back In The USSR by The Beatles)

Flew in from the living room ASAP
Didn't stop to check the hall
Knew that there was something waiting here for me
Dang it's good to hear that call

I'm back in the food bowl again
We don't know how lucky we are, Pooks
Back in the food bowl again

Been away so long I hardly knew the place
Must have been an hour or two
Since I had that gourmet sauce all over my face
Almost didn't know what to do

I'm back in the food bowl again
We don't know how lucky we are, Pooks
Back in the food bowl again

Well those tuna dinners really knock me out
They leave the chicken behind
And those shrimp chunk pouches are the cat's meow
That herring's always on my mind

Oooo show me to the scallops in the creamy sauce
Take me out to that big trout farm
Let me hear those can openers ringing out
Whitefish keeps your kittens warm

I'm back in the food bowl again
We don't know how lucky we are, Pooks
Back in the food bowl again

Back in the food bowl...
Back in the food bowl...
Back in the food bowl again

To the tune of, "Here Comes Santa Claus."

Feral kitties, feral kitties,
They cannot be tamed;
Here's a list of feral kitty
Cats that I have named:
Friday, Clawed-Ya,
Puff and Scottiecat
Lance and Peanut, too;
Oz and White Tip,
Now they act
Like other kitties do.

Feral kitties, feral kitties,
They were born outside;
When they saw a Human they would
Run away and hide.
People say that you can never
Close the Feral Gap;
Six are on the sofa now,
And two are on my lap.

Feral kitties, feral kitties,
Always on the run,
These ferocious, untamed kitties
Now lounge in the sun;
"Amor vincit omnia et
Nos cedamus amor – i" -
Virgil's Gallus knew that Love
Lived everlastingly.

Captain Meow is my best friend and my only friend. He and I have been shut in together in a city apartment for ten years. I bring him outside sometimes because I know he needs it, but it's supervised play. Yesterday he chased one of the squirrels up a tree. Tried to go up after it, but he's ten and a bit fat now. (I'm kind of glad he didn't get up there, and get himself stuck, or manage to hurt the squirrel. It swore at him! ..but you just know it was the height of cat fun for him...running in the sun, chasing things, sniffin' stuff...pretending to be disinterested o_O

When he was a kitten I'd roll him on his back on my arm, hold him like a baby, and he'd look up at me with those big trusting eyes...well, I knew it was time to sing but all I could think of other than some aggressive rock number (with singing akin to yelling) was "I knew an old lady.." So we'd do a few verses of I knew an old lady ("who swallowed a fly..I don't know why she swallowed the fly..." And so on.) It seems foolish that's all I could come up with to sing to him, considering I'm a prolific songwriter, but..I only just managed to get some new instruments again recently. So I will have to write for him now. I know I will, because that's where songwriting comes from, the things you feel most about. Actually I'm a little worried what I play may come across as a passionate love song written for a partner. But..I guess that's what he is to me. My sweet beautiful Captain Meow, friends forever, buddies for life. :)

I actually managed to get every instrument a rock band had, plus a 16 track recorder. There's guitars, piano, drums, mics and harmonicas. So I can write and play all the parts of a song and record the tracks myself. Captain Meow'd be a good harmonica subject. There's melancholy and whimsy in acoustic guitar and harmonica...and throw in some lyrics that express wry humor and wonder. (Think Neil Young when he's angry & funny at the same time.)

Maybe I'll write something as if I am Captain Meow,
and I'm having a good day finding shiny things and bugs,
and leaves blowing by...sniffing things and taking a nap,
to dream of doing it all again. We'll see. I could even post a you tube of it,
but this'd be months from now. I've got a lot of rust to practice away
..and to restart a habit of playing daily, letting an ongoing muse develop.

HERE'S NEIL YOUNG, Old King
It's about a dog, but it's still an ode to a treasured friend, his animal companion.
And it's funny....and sad, and sweet. It's Neil Young ;)

Well, we often sing the chorus part of a song we call "Psycho Kitty"
Not sure how many people will know this song, but lookup "Psycho Killer" by "The Talking Heads" on You tube.
It funny, the only word that really needs to be changed in the whole song is Killer to Kitty, and it fits, if you have a, shall we say, "temperamental" cat on your hands!!!

To the tune of "For Free" by Joni Mitchell

I slept last night in an alleyway
Where my hoomins abandoned me
I don’t understand why they did what they did
I thought I was family
I’m lonely and scared and I’m hungry
Waiting for you to save me
But the people hurry by
Without meeting my eyes
While I purr real hopefully

It’s cold out here in the alley
And the weather is starting to snow
I had glossy black fur
But it’s matted and frayed
And my ribs are beginning to show
But I wait and I hope while I shiver
Trusting that someone wants me
But the people go by
Without meeting my eyes
While I cry softly, helplessly

Now somebody calls me gently
And holds me so tenderly
She offers a treat and she
Gathers me close
And she speaks to me soothingly
Now I’m warm and content and happy
Curled near my new found friend
I gaze into her eyes
And put paw on her lap
And I purr my love to the skies
