Happy September!! Fall is coming any day now! (Just probably not that soon for me.) And Happy Labor Day too! I am working on getting all our fall decor up and sorting out my kids dressers to see what new clothing they will need for the coming cool weather. That's always and adventure and a half! ;)

How do you spend work-holidays?

With DH I never know how it will go. We might do a project around the house. We might relax at home. We might go out and do something. I'm deep cleaning part of the house; so that is my plan for our "holiday." DH and our kids want to kayak somewhere; weather permitting. I'm not sure of their plans just yet. I did get hot dogs to roast over the fire pit. (I just realized I didn't get buns!) It was too hot and humid for that Sunday. We might have to save that for a real fall day. ;)

I did manage a little sale shopping. DH did NOT want to go to the mall; but I told him he better not complain about the cost of the kids clothing if he wasn't willing to sale shop with me. I got DS's church pants for half the price I normally have to pay. It's worth a few minutes aggravation. :p

We usually end up doing things around the house. We had friends in for dinner last night, so today we'll be working outside, mowing, weeding a bit, etc.

I've been at the planning department now for 19 years and I'm still not really used to having holidays off work. When I worked at International Paper (worked there for 18 years), we pretty much worked all holidays, except for Labor Day and Christmas. Sometimes we got July 4th off. But everything else was work, work, work. Now that I have days like Columbus Day, MLK Day, Presidents' Day, etc, off work, I'm amazed.

Next month I have off for Columbus Day. I plan on doing a major shopping binge. By myself. No husband. No girlfriends. It will be just me and me. I'm already working on a list of things I want to check out.

I usually do projects that I have not had time for, like cleaning out a closet, deep cleaning a room, etc. This year I am getting ready for 2 craft shows on Oct. 5-6, and Nov. 4 I am way behind on my goal for making a certain amount of inventory so I have been sewing.

I got 2 new foster kittens on Friday. One of them is sneezing so I have to take him to the shelter to get meds. Yesterday he seemed to not be feeling good, but today he is playing with Da Bird so I am relieved about that. That will take about an hour.

I also have to get some groceries and I have to get an item to finish a bag I am working on. And finish laundry. I usually labor on labor day.

I usually volunteer to work most holidays since my job is considered an "essential" one. The extra money is also welcomed. I have today off since I'm at a new job that is still starting up so there isn't anything specific for me to do yet. We will need to work out coverage starting with Columbus Day. When I do have holidays off because others have volunteered, I spend it running errands if the stores are open and / or just having a lazy day.

I don't work Mondays ordinarily (I work a compressed week, 10 hour days Tuesday through Friday), so holiday Mondays are pretty much the same as any other Monday.

The main difference is that I have convinced my felines that it is not necessary to get up at 4:45 to eat--they can wait until after the sun has actually put in an appearance for the day. Monday then is a bit of errand running (but no bank errands if it's actually a holiday), laundry, and some plinking at the range.

I work in retail so holidays are just another day. I'm at work as I type this, because being the holiday, it is dead in here today. I'm not complaining though, I get to catch up on some projects at work and my day ends at 2 before it gets somewhat busy.

I need one of those types of shopping days every now and then! I've done that for my birthday several times now; but this year I'm getting a tooth fixed on my birthday so there goes that plan! We are getting a new home decor type store too. I NEED to check that out KID FREE!!:smash:
I am envious of you. I have 3 years and 8 months before I can retire. I have so many things to do I don't have time to work.
You sound like my dad. Except he's down to counting it in months... 34 months he says.
Sleeping late and not setting the alarm. :D
:cloud9: I did that today! Bliss! Except I don't usually set an alarm clock. I got a text an hour before I wanted to be up; but I dozed back off. DH let the kids watch TV and no one disturbed me otherwise. Not even DH.

Those 3 years and 8 months will fly by. I am not in the best of health but I sure enjoy my retirement. It is so nice not having to get up at 4 am to go to work.

You mean you got to sleep in until 4 A.M.? I was going out the door at that time.

It depends on the weather for me. If it is nice outside, I will pack a picnic lunch and visit one of the nature preserves/hiking trails that I enjoy. I will have my picnic lunch, and then I will go for a long nature walk.

If it is rainy(like today), or too cold to go outside, I will stay home and spend the day with my cats. Olivie and I are baking cookies right now.

Usually:

-Outdoor BBQ paired with normal daily routine, kicking back and doing as little as possible.
-Today, floor mopping and swearing at the "damned idiot sponge" that is used to death and falls apart in my hand, clearing the pantry, stocking shelves, making inventory lists, and peeling cat after cat out of the pantry because a closed door that is now open = the most interesting thing in the world. :freak:

Yet another retiree here so it's just another day. I sometimes help a local farmer (drive truck etc) so on those "holidays" it's business as usual. That's not underway here yet. I was invited to a cookout this late afternoon but it's bloody hot and muggy here now so I declined that and will either possibly go hit the drive-up in a bit or it will be another of those frozen dinner things. Miss Kitti isn't a table-scrap eater so she doesn't care one way or the other, except that she'll resent my being gone and then make a big deal out of forgiving me.

You've gotten the snub and forgiveness of the Queen Cat, too, huh?
We didn't even do a BBQ this year. Most years we do, and it's pretty fun but we just ran out of time and ambition.

As I explained in the other thread, I lost my G/F of 10 years last April -- the cat was actually hers. And we would often refer to Miss Kitti as "her royal holiness," LOL. Getting forgiven by cats for some imagined slight is just part of living with a cat. Far as the cookout goes Sue loved them would not have taken no for an answer and I'd have been grilling something or other with the sweat rolling about now, but between the heat and memories, I just didn't feel the love this year.

Yep! I "only" slept until 11 today :D. Since then I've been doing litterboxes. That's usually what I do on holidays. . .I've been throwing the dirty boxes in the shed for a while so now I have to scrub them. That's why I have so many spare boxes, after all, but it does catch up to me after a while.
