Hey guys! I'm pretty much new to the forums and am in need of advice (and support). Sorry for long post ahead!

We noticed about a month ago that my 14 year old cat had been experiencing pain/discomfort in her mouth. She would not eat well and would always be shaking her head and paw at her left side of the mouth and she wasn't acting as her usual self. We took her to the vet and they confirmed that it seemed one of her teeth was bad. At first they had said that it was one of her pre-molars on the left side that seemed to be causing the discomfort.

This year has been pretty rough for us, with unexpected expenses and so we could not get the tooth extracted as soon as we would have liked.. (We had to pay some bills first and save up before we could!) So we were given antibiotics to fight off any infection that may appear, to be given for a week. We were finally able to afford getting her teeth cleaned and the bad tooth extracted about a week and a half ago. They took blood tests before booking the dental work and everything came out normal.

So finally the day arrives and to my shock the vet had extracted her left upper canine tooth instead of the molar they had mentioned before. He showed us pictures and told us that it seemed that it was the canine tooth all along that may have been causing the pain, because it was pretty loose and the gums in that area had some inflammation. We were pretty upset at first because he told us this after the tooth was extracted and we were not told beforehand.

She was released that same day and we were given liquid antibiotics and pain meds to be applied directly at her gums. My cat has not seemed to improve in mood. She's still hiding and not eating as much as before. She honestly seems depressed and I have no idea why! We took her back to the vet a few days ago and were given more pain meds to apply to the gums and were told to continue giving her the antibiotics. We offer her favorite treats and sometimes it seems like she has trouble chewing them (perhaps discomfort?) and just drops them at times...

My question is...is this normal? I know it's painful for the first few days after a tooth extraction but it's nearly been two weeks. We have concerns that perhaps the wrong tooth may have been extracted... We're really hoping this is not the case. We're low on money right now and this is really stressing me and my family out. It's worth mentioning that her whole life she's been on wet canned food and has always been very picky. We give her cat treats every now and then. I'm really worried for my cat's wellbeing and I don't know what to do. Any thoughts?

I would call a few different vets and explain whats going on, sometimes they'll give advice over the phone. You could also ask about pricing for check up(some vets are cheaper than others) just to get another opinion. If they did remove the wrong tooth, I'd highly suggest calling the vet who did the extraction and asking what they can do price wise to fix this considering this would be their mistake.

Best of luck to you and keep us posted!

Thanks! I'll have to wait until Monday to make some calls but I've found a few different vets in my area.

Today she seems to be eating a little more than yesterday but she's still hiding all day long.

Could the pain killer applied to her gums also be affecting her tast buds, resulting in her food not tasting normal?

Hard to say, sometimes after applying the pain killer she goes right away to eating but other times she just ignores the food..
