Does Anyone Know What This Could Be...? (short Video)

We adopted a ragdoll this past Saturday, and she came to us via plane. She's been doing very well minus this weird sound she's making that I don't even know how to explain. Gagging? Wheezing? We took her to the vet within 48 hours of getting her for a check-up and they told me she looked really well, and that they were very happy with how well her breeders were taking care of her. She has all necessary medication for her age (2.5 months, will be 3 months on August 18th). I tried explaining the sound to the vet when I was there but didn't know how to word it, so they told me to keep an eye out and let them know if anything.

However, occasionally she makes this noise:

It's usually accompanied by her keeping her head low, as if she were about to cough up a hairball. It stops fairly quickly (within 30 seconds or less), and she goes back to doing whatever she was doing. She does not seem depressed or less active at all.

Does anyone know what this could be? I can't even search because I don't know what keywords to type for this sort of issue...

It sounds like a hairball related thing to me, would you be able to give her some laxatone or something for hairballs?

If she's eating, behaving and using the litterbox normally, I think she's ok. You could always bring her back and get your vet to listen to the video if you're really worried though!

Try to get another recording, but with video, if possible. I THINK this sounds like a hairball, as well, but if your vet can see AND hear it, it will make a proper diagnosis much, much easier! Cats are like cars...they NEVER make "that funny noise" when there's a vet or a mechanic present!

I maximized the volume, and it still just sounds to me like someone stamping a foot or knocking on the door, which means nothing. Without video to go with the audio I have no guesses at all. Hair ball is a definite possibility; she's old enough to begin having them.

My 12-year old Ragdoll and Siamese mix makes the same noise and than coughs up a hairball 2 seconds later and sometimes undigested wet food mixed with the hairball. He did it last Monday and again today. When he was a kitten, we were feeding him dry kibble for adult cats (a hairball formula) instead of kitten food, as this is what the breeder advised us to do. He always does it after eating wet food.

It sounds like hairball coughing to me, too. She just isn't bringing it up. My vet gave me some fish oil to put on my hairball sufferer that seemed to help, but I have to warn you it smells horrible, like fish. It splashed off her food and I carried it around all over the house.

My bad, it was super dark so I couldn't even record her visibly. That and she stops doing the coughing thing every time I turn my recorder on and face her....:( Exactly like Mamanyt said!

Thanks very much all! I just got home with an anti-hairball product and am hopeful this stops soon.

Thanks all! :) Went to the vet and it seems like she's just fighting an infection, so she got an antibiotic shot and we were sent home with amoxicillin. Hopefully it improves from here.

Keep us posted! Once we become involved like this, your cat, to some extent, becomes "our" cat, too! And we worry. AND we love happy endings, too!
