My little fellow Montgomery is six years old. He has EPI, IBD, and SIBO. He also has a urinary tract infection and is on antibiotics. Because of the EPI, his idea of the litter box is rather abstract...Up until the urinary tract infection, he was getting better about peeing in the litter box, but that's gone out the window. He likes to pee on newspaper if its left out. I'm okay with him peeing on newspaper if that's what he wants and intend to line a brand new litter box with it. I'm wondering if Dr. Elsey's Cat Attractant will work if I sprinkle some between the layers. It says not to use with paper but I think that means the pelleted newspaper litter, which is awful stuff anyway. Anyone ever tried this?

I am not no. However i would imagine you are correct about not using it with paper litter, but i have no idea what the reasoning would be, or if it would extend to news paper? I think i would email Dr. Elseys on their website and ask, i would wonder why? I was about to email them myself, but i see Mamanyt1953 Mamanyt1953 had beat me to that :) while i was posting long :)

I have read that some cats like to use newspaper, some like a layer of that, some people use puppy pee pads.

Some cats like a long low litter box with just a bit of litter an inch or so deep in half the box, the other half of the box bare, or lined with newspaper.
you can try this with clay litter, some of Dr. Elseys has the cat attract in it already, or their fine grained respiratory relief silica gel crystal litter. my cats hate most silica gel litter, they do like this one, i think because it is so very fine, and has the cat attract. And my girls like less litter, with this gel i only put about 1 inch in the box.

I think there may be all kinds of creative ways to get him into a box. and if he is attracted to newspaper then thats a great thing to incorporate, maybe with the small amount of litter, then if it works build up to more litter and less paper?

Bless his heart, do keep us updated with how he is doing! :heartshape:

Thanks everyone for the help. He eats Hill's w/d dry food and Royal Canin Ultra Light canned food. Its a delicate balance. Too much dry, he gets constipated, too much wet, he gets uncontrollable diarrhea. He eats six small meals each day, with two size zero capsules filled with his Pank-Aid at each meal. He is on Tylosin three times a day as well. Currently, he's on Baytril for the urinary tract infection. His diet must remain as is, as we seem to have hit the sweet spot of "Goldilocks" stool. We have a large water fountain which is cleaned and refilled daily and he loves to walk up to that and drink (it's face-height for him). Part of his problem is that EPI is so rare in cats, he was four years old before he was diagnosed, despite having seen multiple veterinarians (a new veterinarian bought the clinic we go to and she diagnosed him the day she met him). Kitty litter used to stick to him, going to the box hurt, and so it became a not so nice place to go. I don't care if he ever uses kitty litter. Newspaper is free and plentiful. I just want him to go in one spot.

She is a blessing, with nearly thirty years of practice behind her before she bought this little clinic. An amazing veterinarian. We've thrown her so many curve balls since, and she hasn't even blinked.

Oh by the way, in the avatar photo, the person on the left looks a bit like a current American lady country singer

I haven't heard back from Dr. Elsey's yet, but I'm scanning my emails regularly. Of course, I sent it off on Friday, and today is Monday, so it is early days yet.

The person on the left is Amy Ray, the right is Emily Saliers, and they are singers. I'm a huge Indigo Girls fan.
Montgomery sleeps in his new litter box. He loves it. He curls up and naps the morning away there...
