You know how you drink water and some times it 'goes down the wrong tube'? Do think that can happen to cats? I've seen it 2 times in my cats. He does that cough thing we do after drinking water the wrong way. Or do you think its something else? He sneezes a lot when he drinks too. Like hes sniffing it on accident

Hi! can you get a video of it?
If you can, maybe send it in to your vet - see if they think there's something more going on?

Hi RavenHawke.

Yes, it can certainly happen with cats. BUT..............

If a cat breathes in ("aspirates") any liquid, there is a real danger that they can develop an often fatal type of pneumonia....Aspiration Pneumonia: Aspiration Pneumonia in Cats - PetPlace
(if you get an annoying popup overlay page there, just click the 'proceed to page' button)

If this were my cat, I'd have it examined ASAP - first to have the breathing examined for any evidence of aspiration and, secondly, with a focus on the swallowing - you'll notice from that article that, while uncommon, muscular/paralysis issues can occur/exist in cats.

Is this a cat with any current/existing health issues?

He has hyperthyroidism. It doesnt happen all the time, just sometimes. I raised the water bowl, I hope that helps. I notice when he drinks he is really hunched over.

Cats have the same respiratory and digestive systems we do but I never saw a cat cough or sneeze after drinking water. Maybe they are better at swallowing the way their bodies are designed with "sandpaper" tongues.

Well, that might just help. I do the same with their food dishes....it's 'just plain more comfortable', too.:)

Keep a close e̶y̶e̶ ear on his breathing and we'll all keep our fingers crossed for the best!

(I sent you a message too)
