Cat Is Lethargic, Vet Says It's Uti + Toothache

Hello! My five-year old cat has been lethargic for the past several days. She moves very little, eats little (if at all), and overall looks awful. We took her to the vet on Monday; the vet said she had a UTI and some teeth issues. They gave her an antibiotic for the UTI and some fluids. On Friday, we are taking her back for a teeth cleaning (under anesthesia) and a tooth extraction, plus they will make sure her UTI is getting better. Today she looked so miserable, and she refused to eat! I am at a loss of what to do. Should I want until Friday or bring her into the doctor's office ASAP? I left her a lot of water, but hard to see if she's actually drinking. She is using the litterbox and is walking around, although she seems very weak.

I would imagine both of those issues would cause her to be lethargic, and not eat. She does need to eat, how long has it been since she ate? i would offer all her favorites, wet food, dry food, treats, what ever she loves, she just needs to eat. If more than 24 hours i would talk to the vet. Cats can get deathly sick if they go too long without food. Best of luck to her, and keep us updated.

Thanks for the reply. Hard to tell when she last ate as I leave free access to food when I'm at work. She's not big on eating on the best of days - she just doesn't like food! I'll try to get her to eat something when I get home and call the vet if she doesn't oblige. She's a difficult animal at times so might be uncooperative.

I understand, my little white girl is not food motivated at all. she will not even eat treats. She eats dr. elseys dry food, and that's about it. i can occasionally get her to eat a bit of salmon or tuna wet food, if you have any of that around?

if you are free feeding dry, which i do as well, you may want to measure for the next few days? If she is the only cat you can put out a cup of food, then later measure it to see if she ate enough to tell? if you dont think she is eating, then yes call the vet.

I called the vet yesterday and they told me to bring the cat in first thing in the morning, which I did. She has an inner ear infection and is hospitalized until Saturday. I am hoping that she will get better by then under doctors' care!

I am glad you took your baby to the vet. I am sorry she had to be hospitalized. I know how hard it is as I have been there. Hopefully you can visit your baby in the hospital. I visited my Sonny every day. He made a full recovery. He would not eat for the vet so we were allowed to bring in wet food to feed him. This is something you might want to ask about. Some people also bring a dirty t-shirt and leave it for the cat to snuggle with. It is great that your baby is getting the treatment she needs and is probably in a lot less pain then she was before getting treatment. Please keep us updated on how she is doing.

Thank you for the nice words. I'm happy Sonny made a full recovery! I can't visit unfortunately as we live an hour away from the clinic. That's how far I have to drive to find a clinic that's good and affordable! But they have the food she loves so that's good. She's on an IV and will be sleeping most of the day so hopefully that will help her...

It is good that you have her food there. Sonny was much closer to home so it was easy for me to get there. The staff will give her attention too if she wants it. I know my Sonny was asking the staff for pets and they did give him attention while he was there. You should be able to at least call the clinic and get updates on your baby. The vet called me once a day to give me updates but I could call and check in with the techs for more updates.

We picked the cat up from the hospital on Saturday. She's feeling much better and is pretty much back to being her old self. I still have to give her a number of medications which she does not enjoy, oh well it's for her benefit! The cost ended up being astronomical, truly it's a pricey hobby to have pets! But Sheba feels better and that's what matters.
