Hey everyone! I'm new here. I have 2 kitties, Duke and Gizmo. Duke is 8 years old and just had a dental cleaning and 7 extractions :(, FORLs. Well, on Tuesday. He is doing well as far as pain, I was giving him Buprenex every 12 hours, which he sort of tolerated. He's playing a lot and eating (less than usual because he can't have his kibbles, which he's rather miffed about). Drinking and peeing his normal amount.

My only concern is his energy and his pooping. I think he has made only one bowl movement since he's been home (he may not have - I have 2 cats and I'm sure you all know it's hard to keep track of). With the amount he's eating, I'm a little concerned about that. He also has periods of complete staring into space and zoned out for several hours (or sleeping), and then he's back to playing and romping. This is day 4. Do you guys think is normal progress as far as energy? No more Buprenex, he's all out now.

Thanks in advance and thanks for having us on the site!

Bless his heart. Is he your avatar? beautiful cat!
Hopefully he will be better soon! I would say if you are not sure about his bowel movements in the next day or so call your vet. It may be due to the little amount of food, or the medications. But if there is a problem the sooner you catch it the better!
Do keep us updated! and post photos of your babies when you have time :)

~ Your kitty will be much more comfortable and happy as a result of dental work .
The last cat I had that needed a few extractions took about 5 days to get back to normal . She was older - about 15 - and did very well afterward !
Take care ... :hellocomputer:

Yes, that's him! Quite a fancy looking guy, eh?

Yeah, I was thinking it was a combo. He typically eats fiber response dry food, so being off that plus the painkillers...seems like the recipe for constipation. Thanks for your thoughts!

Good to know, 5 days, thank you. He seems about 75%, much better at night than he is in the day. Thank you for sharing your experience :)

When my cat got extractions she took 2 weeks, maybe even longer, to get back to normal. She refused to eat for days and would only lick the gravy off Fancy Feast shreds for a ridiculously long time before she would go back to her normal food. She also kept tearing her stitches open so she healed slower and made bloody messes everywhere. Based on my experience, your cat is making superb progress!

Oh man, how difficult. I'm counting my blessings that he did so well, then. Thank you for your reply!

Ah. Amalie adjusts really well within about 48 hours. That gives time for the anesthesia to completely exit and the initial pain relief to wear off. Buprenorphine does cause constipation, and it can seem alarming to have to wait up to 3 days for the cat to go. I never really notice her in the box, but I can tell you that from my bub being on pain relief.
I believe with my tortie that we've had 9 extractions over the last 5 years for her FORLs.

Hi everyone. Still don't think he has pooped, waiting patiently or the vet to open tomorrow morning. We went against the rules today and I hand fed him some dry food, as his food intake (wet) is decreasing. He just swallowed the kibble whole and no problem there. He's sleeping a lot more and more withdrawn. Noticed a more funky odor to his mouth as well. Praying it isn't infection.
