Hi there (this post is going to be a little long, sorry. New cat mom here:biggrin:)

I got Benji about 2.5 months ago when he just turned 3months. He is the first cat I ever had so I don’t know much about cats. Right now, Benji is on dry food only (Purina One). I gave him 1/3 of a cup a day up until he turned 4 months and now I’m giving him 3/4 cup a day. He is not free feeding, I feed him 3 times a day.

I’m all for having healthy animals so I was wondering what is the helthiest brand out there of wet and dry food! I heard that it is best to give them wet and dry food so i’m willing to start buying him wet food.

Besides the brand, how much should I feed him when I get both types of food and how many times a day?

Benji is going to be 5 months next week. He is almost 7lbs (6.8), he just got neutured and was seen by a vet. Vet said he is healthy and not overweight.

Thank you so much for helping out

Heres a pic of Benji!

Hi! Glad you're here! For now you want to literally feed your gorgeous fellow as much as he will eat while he's a kitten and in major growth mode. However you do that regarding scheduling is up to you, some people do canned am pm, and kibble during the day....but whatever works for you.
Here are some to consider;
Instinct raw boost
Merrick Backcountry
Tiki cat
Redbarn
Acana
Evangers
Lotus just juicy
Farmina
Orijen
Canada fresh
Nutrisca
Ziwi peak

well, this is a question you will get different answers from everyone :) Different cats like different foods, and need different amounts.

most cats under a year to a year and a half or so i always have fed them all they want, they do so much growing and developing they need lots of food and nutrition.

My cats right now get free fed Dr. Elseys dry food. Its very high protein moderate fat, and very low carb. In my opinion the best dry on the market right now. For my guys anyway :) I feed two wet meals per day, and leave out Dr. elseys dry at all times. It is one they all like, but with the high protein no one over eats or has a weight problem. and most of the wet foods i feed are lower in fat, carbs and calories, high in protein

Wet there are a lot more options. I try to always feed as high protein, moderate fat, and low carb as possible. I am feeding a rotation of several different foods. Weruva, tiki cat after dark, American journey, Nutro minced chicken, and sliced turkey, sometimes the soft loaf pate. Nulo, the minced flavors only. Against the grain chicken and cheese, chicken and pumpkin. Fussie cat the super premium chicken and beef and chicken and liver. Some of the Earthborn holistic foods. and some fancy feast, with fancy feast i only feed the classics, or the grilled flavors.

these are two places i look up cat food. Dr. Piersons list is easy to look at for protein fat and carbs. but she does not do dry, and not all foods are on there.

http://catinfo.org/docs/CatFoodProteinFatCarbPhosphorusChart.pdf

the cat food database has wet and dry, and more foods. i have found with her you have to watch the carb count she gives, if she does not have access to the ash she figures the carbs without it. such as american journey wet food, she shows the carbs at 20% and 0 ash. I contacted chewy about the ash, they said 2.6% ash in the poultry minced flavors. so including the ash information i calculate carbs at 8% dry matter basis. I try to feed foods that have less than 10 % carbs dry matter basis. and as high protein, meat protein, not vegetable protein as possible.

Benji is a Beautiful boy, i am glad you posted photos of him :) Try not to stress over food too much, its only one part, a big part yes, of having a healthy happy cat. Keep up with vet visits, use good dust free fragrance free litter, play and love and a stress free home, are all important parts. Feed him a variety of foods, the best that you can comfortable afford, and enjoy your kitten :)

It's the best that you can afford that they will eat.

I can barely afford this but the girls' main diet is Nature's Variety Instinct canned and Dr Elsey's cleanprotein kibble.

Other people feed fancy feast and purina one. We all have our own opinions, budgets, and sometimes fussy cats.

There are so many choices . I think "the best" will be different for everyone . It depends on what your cat will eat and what you can afford . For example: Our cats eat Dr. Elseys Clean Protein kibble . Its high protein , low carb . The only wet food they like is Fancy Feast Classic.
For dry food look for a brand that is lowest carbs possible and high protein . I would suggest you go to PetSmart or Petco browse through the cat food isle and pick up one can of several different brands and see what your cat likes .

Like others said, personal preference and budget for the most part. I try to avoid corn, wheat and soy.

I feed my cat 100% Friskies wet now. She is an adult so she doesn't eat as much as a kitten. I've heard all wet is best when possible and the only way to make that work for my budget was with Friskies.
When I was doing dry, my cat's favorite was the Purina Beyond Chicken & egg formula.

In my personal opinion some Orijen (not the Regional Red variety), Acana, Instinct Raw Boost and Fromm are some of the best premium dry foods on the market. I know that is not in the budget for many people so some pretty affordable yet still good kibbles are Taste of the Wild, Wellness Core (grain free), Merrick, etc. Just go to your local pet store and turn the bag around and read the ingredients, make sure it says grain free and preferably the first few ingredients are actual meat (preferably not meal).

As far as wet food goes I know a lot of people do a rotational diet which is awesome. I do a mixture of pates like Wellness, Earthborn, Taste of the Wild, Nutro, Merrick, Against the Grain, etc. I always get the grain free variety and stay far away from cans with by-products like Fancy Feast and Friskies.

My cat gets wet food twice a day at 2 A.M. and 3P.M. and always has a dish of dry food available.
What cat food is available in Puerto Rico? I live in Jordan and variety is limited. Try different foods to see what your cat likes. My cat is very picky with food. The importance is what is your cat willing to eat.

Mine have been on Fancy Feast for years. The pate formulas, not the gravy ones. I have prescription kibble for my boy because he forms crystals easily.

I tend to rotate cans, my guy is picky. Fancy feast classic/pate, Ziwipeaks, Wellness...some others thrown in, and also 2x per week he gets dry, as he loves it and if I had him solely on it he'd probably get addicted. Orijen for dry at this point, trying it out via sample bag.

I feed my guy Performatrin Ultra for both wet and dry (I think this is a Canadian company only available in Canada). It’s grain free which I think is best for your cat!

I feed him wet twice a day and free feed dry - around 2/3 cup per day.

I personally am not a fan of Blue. It may be fine, but it has too many peas in it for my taste. I prefer, Dr. Elseys, Farmina, Taste of the wild prey, or the go fit+free.

I know many people feed Blue. But i think they were just bought by a different company, this may be good or bad, or no changes don't know. I would kind of be afraid to bring in a new food for my guys that could change over the next few months?
