(Long)

The beginning of December we got another Male cat. Both are neutered. B , our first cat, and M, the new cat, have had to be separated because they get tense around each other.

Have tried methods to get they slightly aquatinted. We usually will leave the door separating them ajar and they play with each other through it. Yet when together in the same room they get tense and walk slowly.
B will slightly growl.

Now it’s been 2 months since we got M and last night he peed on the couch. He squated and peed while husband was petting him.
We thought it might be because his litter box was semi full so we cleaned it out and tried to clean the couch.

This morning I put blankets on the couch to give it some cushioning while we continue to clean the soiled cushions and he peed again in the same spot!

We don’t really know what to do. I’ve never had a cat do this before even when I’ve previously had two male cats.

Any advice and solutions are welcome. We really want this to work with the cat because we love him and he’s the sweetest thing but this peeing is not acceptable.

It may be that he is trying to mark that spot as his? I read an article one that made a lot of sense to me. It was about cats and resources. why they try to mark stuff as theirs, why they fight each other.

Cats stress over resources, this is anything and everything, food, water, space, toys, people, they see everything they need to survive as a resource. If there is not enough of one thing or the other the cat will stress and fight other cats, or try to mark what is there as theirs. so.. maybe they need more space, or more attention. One on one play. Feather wands are great for this, you can really get them going, then a treat after. this type of play can help correct many bad behaviors, but it need to be done daily, if possible.

Cat trees are great, or any shelves or furniture you may have that you can give them vertical spaces to sit?

Do they each have a separate food bowl? Do they each have separate litter boxes? even if in the same room 2 or 3 litter boxes is advisable. Rule of thumb is 1 box per cat, and then 1 more. Some cats do not like to go where another has been, at least until its cleaned well. They like clean boxes and litter, i use unscented litter, scoop several times per day, and dump, wash and refill with clean litter every 2 weeks, or more often if needed. Resources :)

There are also enzyme cleaners and sprays you can use where the cat went, that is suppose to block the smell so they hopefully will not go there again.? Or something to block the couch from him for a while? Best of luck!

First, you are going to have to invest in a good enzymatic cleaner. Even if you can't smell the cat pee, he can, and it will bring him back to that spot again and again. Other than that, I'm going to give you links to several articles about introducing cats, reintroducing cats, litter box issues, etc. There are quite a few of them, but they are not overly-long, and they are very clear and concise, and FULL of good information! I'm confident that somewhere in them are the answers you need to get the cats happy with one another and stop the peeing!

LOL, I told you there were a lot, but it isn't as daunting as it looks!

*UPDATE*
Thanks for all the info.
We ended up taking him to the doctor and he had a UTI along with the doctor said he was a lot older than what the adoption place told us (Which is all fine, just good to know)

Outside of that the two cats don't get along great so I'm very thankful for the articles on how to introduce them better because that's going to be a BIIIG help.

As for the peeing, we replaced our foam cushions and finished all his medication and he hasn't peed since.
