My husband lost his job. The goal right now is to keep a roof over the humans and cats' heads, and keep us all eating.

After the lay off, I put my 3 kitties on Special Kitty canned food, which is $1 for 22 oz. I've been contemplating and wondering if this is about as cheap as we can get or if adding some dry food would help cut costs a little more.

Should I bother adding some dry food, or are costs going to be similar, either way?

Any comments from others who've had to feed cats during hard times? How did you make it through?

My 2 cats get half a cup each of Purina Cat Chow Complete in the blue bag at 7am, and they share a can of Friskies Shreds at 7pm for dinner. They won't eat Special Kitty.

I saw on their website (one of the mealtime videos) that Best Friends mixes dry and canned with water for the cats. Of course they have to eat it right away, but that may be an option, if your cats are willing.

Most cats will probably be fine if you add some dry food (but don't get anything cheaper than Cat Chow or Friskies; super cheap dry foods are more trouble than they're worth), but if you have any cats with urinary issues or kidney problems it would probably be cheaper in the long run to stay with the canned food. Vets cost more than canned food :/.

I sat down and figured out that my current all canned diet is costing me $0.40 per day per cat. That amounts to $12 per month for each kitty or $36 total. I figured out that if I fed the 4Health dry cat food (the regular version, not the grain free) and fed 3 oz of wet food per day per cat, it would cost me $0.26 per day or $7.50 per cat per month.

For that small of a savings, I'm not going to bother with adding in dry food unless things get super drastic.
