Hello,

I am the new mommy of a Siberian kitten. Alexander is currently 1 lb and 6 ounces at 10 weeks old. He seems rather small, but when I picked him up at 8 weeks at the breeder's house he was the biggest out of the litter. Is his size abnormal? Since he has been here, he has been putting on weight very well.

Secondly, he came to our house with fleas, and possibly worms, so he was given a revolution flea treatment, gentle flea bath and a preventative deworming treatment. He is doing much better since then. But in the last week I have noticed he is missing hair above both of his eyes and below his ears. Is this because he is just growing, or is there something more to it?

P.S. If we could have adopted, we would have. We love cats but are extremely allergic. A Siberian or a Balinese breed were our only options. He is truly hypoallergenic and we are so thankful to have him.

Hi, welcome to TCS and congratulations on finding a kitten that doesn't play havoc with your allergies! Alexander is a little doll, isn't he?

Now, this is a weight chart for kittens:
Kitten Weight Chart | Ask The Cat Doctor

As you can see, Alexander is just a wee, wee bit below normal. And Siberians tend to run a little large, although they are considered a medium size cats, with adults in the 8-17 pound range. I'm thinking he might have had a bit of a rough start, to have come to you with both internal and external parasites, but you say that he is gaining well, and that's the main thing. Has he had a first vet check yet? That will do much to set your mind at ease!

As for the "missing hair," this is my tortie, Hekitty:

Tortie Dreams 1.JPG

As you can see, the hair between her ears and eyes looks much thinner. This seems to be because it stands up straighter, and it is like that on almost every cat I've ever seen. Unless it thins further, or gets bumps or raw spots, don't worry about it.

Thank you so much for taking the time to right such a kind and reassuring reply. And thank you for extending such a warm welcome. Alexander has been to the vet twice now, once for the fleas and possible worms and a second time because of an eye infection. I didn't want to drag him to the vet for a third visit if it would be unnecessary and stress him out. Thank you for providing the weight chart and your picture of your sweet baby. She is a lovely cat! Her hair looks identical to Alexander's and even though he is underweight, like you said, he is gaining steadily. My worries have been put at ease, blessings to you both!

You are more than welcome! And thank you for the compliment on Hekitty. She is, in my eyes, the most beautiful thing in the world, although she's a tortie through and through, with more than her share of "tortitude!" She rules my home with an iron paw.

We are so happy that you found TCS! This is, in my opinion, one of the best, if not THE best, cat forums on the internet, and I looked at a LOT of them! When you have a moment, click on this link New Cats on the Block and introduce yourself and Alexander to our community! Be warned, we will want LOTS of pictures!

Thank you so much for your advice and kindness. I'm sure your kitty is thankful for such a sweet momma! Alexander is doing well today. I decided to take him into the vet for an overall health checkup, and they said his fur is purrfect but he could still be fighting parasites, so we will find out if that is the case soon. He has quite the adorable, big, tummy. I am new to being a cat momma and couldn't agree more on this being the best cat forum. I stalked the website for quite some time reading advice. I will post pictures soon, and thank you again so much!!

Welcome to TCS! I think Mamany1953 has you taken care of. Sounds to me like Alexander is going to be ok in your caring hands. He's a pretty boy! Sometimes the small kittens turn out to be the biggest cats. Keep us updated!

Thank you Sabian, I appreciate it! You have quite the beautiful baby too! I was told by the breeder that Alexander may be small now but will grow up to be one big kitty since he's a Siberian. He's 1 lb 8 ounces as of yesterday, and I received a call from the vet this morning, NO PARASITES!

Omgosh he could be my little babies identical twin he is precious! My Persian was very small and grew slowly he is huge now! I'd just feed him as much as he is willing to eat you can also try the one formula it worked wonders for us

Very cute cat but beware of breeders that let a kitten go that early, 12-13 weeks is better for the kittens in terms of socialization and health.
Sounds like she was a dodgy backyard breeder type operation.
