Hello! It's been a while. New job + new dog = no time for anything. Just gonna cut to the chase, LOL.

I've had my cats on RadCat. They do great on it, but I'm spending something like 125$/month. I'd like to switch either both cats to morning canned/evening raw, or keep Mrowmrow on raw and switch Keegan to just canned. Saving anything will be great at this point.

Out of the following options, which would you choose:

  • Weruva
  • Wild Calling
  • Hound & Gatos
  • Evanger's
  • Nature's Variety

I'd be purchasing 5.5 oz cans. These all run about 43$ on average for a pack of 24.

If anyone knows of a CHEAP, GOOD canned food, let me know LOL. I'll rotate proteins but will try to get some dark meat in there. I've only been feeding chicken and turkey of RadCat. Planning to try venison this next trip. Mrowmrow pukes up beef.

Thanks, guys!

I think Nature's Variety is a great option. I don't know anything about Hound & Gatos or Wild Calling, but I know that Evanger's has a history of recalls, and I'd be suspicious of Weruva after their recent recall.

Out of those options I would go with Nature’s Variety or Hounds and Gatos.
In my opinion, Rawz is a better brand than all of those and is (generally) cheaper.

I’m wondering though if you need to switch to canned at all? I know in Canada we have much cheaper options for complete raw food than Rad Cat. Actually, even cheaper than canned food. I’m sure there are similar options in the States. Maybe someone who feeds raw can suggest some brands for you.

I'll look into Rawz. :)

I haven't found anything cheaper yet. Everything seems to be about the same price (Nature's Variety raw, RadCat, Darwin's).

What about Abound? I guess it's high protein and grain-free, but is only like .79 a can. My mom suggested it lol.

We do Nature's Variety chicken, either the brown label Ultimate Protein or the yellow label, whichever is on sale. It's $23 on autoship for a 12 can case of 5.5 oz cans. If you do market research or rewards shopping, you can get that cost lower for a case every month or two. I do surveys from time to time that pay me $5 Amazon gift cards. I also do a points program for my online shopping, and I cash points out for Amazon gift cards.
If you don't want to do the Amazon route, Chewy.com has amazing customer service and their shipping speed is 1-2 days if you order $49 or more.

Wow, what do you use for the market research/reward shopping??

I'm down with Amazon or Chewy. I have Prime which makes it a little easier.

Baker St Solutions for very random surveys. Fulfillment takes 4-6 weeks after you qualify and complete, if the survey didn't reach it's quota before you noticed your email invite. I use MyPoints for rewards. They send you emails you usually get points to just click through and load the webpage, but they also have offers to collect points shopping at say, JCPenney, Best Buy, Walmart, Sephora... a bunch of merchants, and you can also gain points for taking surveys in their survey center. You can cash out for a large variety of merchants as well.

I didn't link either program in case if does an affiliate or referral link. I've been using them both for a great, long time. I just dedicate what I get now onto the girls' cat food instead of taking my boyfriend out to dinner.

I've never tried Wild Calling because where I live it's crazy expensive, and neither Hound & Gatos nor Evanger's are available locally for me. Between Nature's Variety and Weruva, I would choose NV for better palatability (according to cats I've had), more protein choices, and better per-calorie pricing on the big cans. Not all cats like pate, though, and Weruva offers a nice variety for picky eaters.

Rawz isn't cheap. A 5.5 oz can runs close to $2. I'm not sure if you can get it in a case or even buy it online.

Pate gives you more food for the money so I'd stick with that and occasionally feed something with texture for variety.

Nature's Variety is good and you can sign up on the NV web site to get coupons by email. Petco and other chain pet stores often have big food sales and include NV so you can really stock up.

Rawz isn't cheap but it's not more expensive than many of the brands the poster mentioned. It's definitely cheaper than most Nature's Variety varieties. You can order it as a case through your local independent food supply store, and many stores give you discounts when you order a case. I also think it has better ingredients than Nature's Variety, but NV has more flavours and textures.

I did canned this past week- no less expensive than RadCat.

I actually bought 10 lbs. of premade raw from something called "RawPaws". Who knows if it'll be any good, but a month's worth of food was 70$.

I'm hoping to use the next month to get more comfortable going back to DIY, starting from the beginning with just chicken. That will probably be the best way to get my cost down.
