Cats do not like hooded boxes, it traps odors and disgusts them. Humans like it, but our friends do not.

My female took to standing up at the end of her urinatiing sessions , and boy would I like to get a hooded box, but she wouldn't like it so I don't. (The vet doesn't know why this behavior started at age 11, I thought of every possible reason myself)

Instead , I purchased plastic cutting boards , the flimsy kind, and insert them in the back and one side , I put paper towel in layers behind the box just in case. Urine hits the plastic boards and I wash them daily .

Clean the litter box twice a day for all cats and there should be 1 box per cat plus 1.

I use jumbo litter boxes and they have pretty decent wall height if that interests you.

I don't know if they would like a hooded litter box since I've never tried one. They are expensive for something they might not use. I want to try the one on Amazon with the clear lid, but it's almost 40 dollars.

I use hooded out of necessity. My apartment is very small, and the box has to be in my bedroom. I try to mitigate it by using a "better"-smelling litter, but every little bit helps.

I use the box with the entrance in the top. Smart kitty or something like that. It really reduces tracking and my cat's never had a problem using it.

ETA: It's CleverCat not SmartKitty.

That's something that has to be left up to the cat. Our last one didn't care one way or the other, so he had a hooded box. Our current cat won't use an open box at all. I work at a shelter, where we generally have around 40 - 70 cats, and around 90% of the cats use the hooded boxes (or don't care and will use both).

The boxes are jumbo ones with the flaps and filters removed. They're scooped at least twice a day at the shelter. I scoop 3 - 5 times a day at home. A hooded box that's too small, isn't scooped often enough, or has a door trapping odors inside is just going to cause avoidance.

Yes we want the cat to be happy so we give the litter box he or she likes

My cats will use either without a problem. I actually prefer an open box. It's just so much easier for me to scoop. I try to clean out the clumps/ poops after each use and with a hooded box it's just to much work to constantly take the lid on/off. I'm just too lazy! :p

We got a covered litterbox with the door on it and no one would use it. it was the only clean litter in the house. I removed the door flap and they used it but they seemed to think it it was a double deck.

We have 5 litter boxes. 4 are hooded and 1 is not. They all get used equally. I think it depends on the cat. Some may like hooded ones, some open and some don't care either way. Mine seem to be in the third category- they don't care either way.

Hmmmmmm.....................I think the answer should come from a cat
Ok then if I must. Yeah it's ok but I may change my mind then HE will have to get an open one. Then I might change my mind again if I so wish just for the fun of it. Ha, I have him right under my thumb, err paw. Now go away you lot, I need another rest.

We always used an open litter box until we adopted a dog - we learned very quickly why they make covered litter boxes. Dogs think kitty poop are gourmet treats, lol.

I prefer an open because it's easier to clean but we just moved and this place is so small the only place for a box where we won't trip or walk through discarded litter is the kitchen. Hence we changed to a hooded one with door removed. The cats have adjusted well.

We just switched to a hooded one, it has no door because they are cats.

They so far like it, but im thinking about going back because it seems so unnatural to me
