Hi there! My 2 year old tuxedo cat had surgery about a month ago to remove some benign tumors from the front of his legs. He's doing just fine now but the incision area is pretty big, about an inch and half long on the front of each leg. The fur around the incisions that was shaved for surgery has started to grow back but so far there is no hair growth directly on the incision sites. Will the hair ever regrow there? His legs are white and I'm afraid with the size of the areas, even the surrounding fur won't be enough to cover them when it regrows.

I once had a cat that needed surgery on one leg. She had a bad BAD case. Fortunately, she recovered and the fur grew back over the incisions. Give it some time. The kitties won't mind.

I can really understand the worry about post-surgery care. Be patient, It will all be ok.

My one cat had surgery to get a benign cyst removed from his head. The incision was less than an inch, and it healed up well. His fur grew right over the scar tissue and you can't notice it at all.
I guess time will tell with your cat, but it's certainly possible that his fur could regrow and cover the scars.

Thanks! I feel better now. I'm such a worry wort, he's been through a lot considering his age. We tried oral medication and steroid injections before going for surgery which was the last resort. The spots were so itchy for my poor baby, we had had to keep him in an e-collar to keep him from biting to the point he drew blood.
I'm still a bit worried because a month after surgery he's still in an e-collar. Counting the time before surgery, this makes over three months he's had it on. I try experimenting with taking the collar off for a while, but every time he eventually goes back to licking the incision areas and they start to look red so I put it back on. Not sure what else I can do but wait and give it more time to heal.

I don't think fur grows back in scar tissue, but there will be just a line of that.  When the fur has grown back on the surrounding shaved area you won't see the scar.

The Havana I used to have got an abcess over his eye from fighting which looked awful at the time I took him to the vets - the hair tends to go round thhem - and he had a large Y-shaped scar.  However a few months later I couldn't find it!  So I'm sure your cat will be fine.

I'm sure it'll be fine. Even if it just grows back around the incision you will most likely not be able to see it. Your kitty will be just fine. I know we tend to worry about that, but I'm sure he feels fine.

My Cat is now 10 years old and he has been on Prednisone for Asthma since he was young.  Back 4 1/2 months ago his stomach needed to be shaved because he needed an ultrasound.  His hair has barely (no pun intended) has barely grown back except for a few whisps of hair.  I was told later by the vet it is because of the steroids.  I am happy it is at least on his underside.  The kicker is that his brother is needed surgery to remove a mass from his back behinde his shoulder blade that looks suspicious.  Unfortunately, they need to shave a large patch on his back  to remove it.  He has also had steroids in the past two months for IBS.  He is a gorgeous Siamese mix and I am worried it will not come back in.  Also FYI  - the cause of the possible malignant spot may be due to his VACCINE!  I was told after the fact that sometimes they cause cancer at the site of the shot - WTH?  As both of my guys are strictly indoors  I will NEVER have them vaccinated again.  I have had horrible problems with vaccines including having my dog die of a cardiac arrest.  BE AWARE of the possible dangers of these vaccines before giving them to your beloved pet.  Once they get past a certain age, other than rabbies and if they are outdoor - there is really no reason to vaccinate except to line the pocket of the vet.

My 1 year old kitten Juno got scratched or somthing but she has a huge scab that goes mostly around her leg. the hair around it is falling out. when you brush against the area fur falls out. She keeps licking it and when I tried to rap it she scratched my hand to shreds, she gave me 15 scratches. it has been a month since we noticed it and from what I have seen it has only gotten worse. I'd hate to think that when she does heal that her leg would have no hair. she is a partly outside cat and this would make it easier to get hurt and scratched and in the colder weather she would have a frozen leg. is it possible for her to heal with her full main (
) or will we have to make her a full time inside cat. (no we are not dumb enough to let her keep going outside she is fully inside for now) please help

hoping for my baby Jun bug to get better

Your cat needs to see a vet. It has been a month and her injury is getting worse. If it were going to heal on its own it would have by now.

I think it depends on the cream. Some are safe, some are not.

You should definitely take your Juna to the vet but if you can't get there right away, call him and ask him about the cream. He'll be able to tell you if it's a problem.

Good luck! Hope Juno feels better soon. [emoji]128149[/emoji]

Update on Juno we have noticed that after we put the cream on it looked like her scab got infected. Turns out the cream created a coat around the wound that helped it heal (yay) we noticed this because her scab began to fall off without anything touching it the cost would detach from her skin and crack off. The skin underneath is the second layer of her skin so it still needs to heal but it is getting better we just couldn't tell because the scab we are still not sure about the fur problem though I suspect that the lotion is making her fur fall off but after all of the scab comes of we will see. hopes up that she gets a full recovery soon and we are still working on the vet our usual doctor is out so we are waiting till he gets back in (3 days) thanks for your help guys I really do appreciate it.

You should definitely still check with a vet about whether the lotion you're putting on your cat is safe. It could be toxic to her.

Update on Juno she has gotten tremendously better and the doctor said she seem to be doing fine (after scratching his eyes out) and that the lotion was fine but that we should have used one more suitable for cats (we used a human lotion, whoops on our part) but he could not be sure what happened with the scab unless he actually saw it, and now all we can do is wait. He also said that the way it sounds it is to soon to tell if she will get her fur back in that spot (fingers crossed). She is now back to her usual self being chased by the dogs and plotting to kill them. Once again getting tremendously better. Thank you guys for all your help me and Juno appreciate it.

Courage, my 3 and a half month kitten got bitten/attacked by a stray cat. And while no wounds were visible she got so sick and threw out thrice the next day. She was on fever too. However as she recovered and went back to her normal self we noticed a scab on the back. It is around two inch long and an inch and a half wide. It has become so hard and it feels it will fall off any moment. When we took her to the vet, it burst and it went messy with all the puss. It has been two days since that and the crack is drying up. I wish to now, apart from applying the creams i have been given for her, would her now close to dead skin fall off? And Would it grow back, fur and all?

My cat Tiggy is a rescue who we found hanging around our house. When we got close to him we discovered he had a nylon collar (not breakaway obviously) embedded in the back of his neck. He had gotten one leg through but of course since nylon will not break, he was trapped. The collar had to be surgically removed and he had quite an infection. It was a large area but now it's much less noticeable in his ginger fur. It is a reminder of the real danger of non breakaway collars.
Anyway... the redt of the story is.... We had tracked his tattoo to discover he had been adopted as a gift for somone but had escaped out a window and never came back. He was on the streets for 3 months! No wonder he was thin. Those people didn't want him back, so he became our boy :) He's not thin anymore. He's got such an awesome personality. I swear he's so grateful to have been rescued.
