Hello everyone, ive been adopted by a stray cat and im very happy about it .. Shes very vocal .. although she seems to have lost her meow.. and likes head butting a lot , but with a lot of frantic tail swishing at the same time .Every now and then she gets a bit aggressive and bitey. Ive had cats all my life and can usually recognise the signs but she catches me completley off guard when she goes for an attack. im wondering if this is becasue shes been on the street so she suddenly gets a bit nervous of me. im careful to make no sudden movements and dont instigate petting unless she asks for it.. which she does a lot.
Im going to worm her in case its a hunger thing.
Can I expect this behaviour to gradually go away as she gets more confident or is it a territorial thing in which case im going to have to do something about it ? its making me a bit wary of her.

It may be a behavioral trait she will have for years, or she may outgrow it. She might only need to be spayed!
I had fostered a mama and her four babies, she was really sweet but she would bite and scratch unprovoked. Ironically, she wasn't a feral or stay, she was a pet who was given to me because her owner was no longer able to take care of them: got evicted.
She never grew out of it and was therefore classified as unadoptable. I kept her until one day my roommate let her outside and she never came back. I got a call and she had shown up at her old owner's new place, where she's been staying since, even though she isn't allowed!
So, even if it's something she doesn't stop, just know she can still be just as loveable and loyal :hearthrob:
Of course, it's a lot to ask to keep getting scratched up for as long as you have her. I'd recommend something called Soft Paws, I believe they're glue-on silicone claw "sheaths", and I hear very good things About them!

I was adopted by a 2 month old feral kitten who's now 18 months old. She has always been a bit bitey and sometimes bites too hard. The best way to teach her not to bite too hard it to "react" and then disengage. Be consistent and clear. Use the same phrase.
Feral cats are a bit more full on so they play a bit harder and are a bit more intense....so keep that in mind.

My late cat Zoya should also bite without previous warning. She would rub herself asking to be petted then 15 seconds and bite!

I grew tough skin, and she bit me for 15 years. But she never did it agressively. She was always purring while she did it. I think she reached overexcitment very quickly. Also she did it only to me (Mom), never to my parents or any guest that came to the house.

Maybe your cat's love bites are just a bit harder, because she grew up on the streets and no one taugh her better? You may need some patience to show her that she doesn't need to love so hard. Does she release if you react with pain?

My cat Luciano bites in much the same way. After enduring this for the winter & spring, now that it's summer & I'm wearing less clothing, I did something about it. Saying no and disengaging never worked with him. He's on medication now, and though it's only been a few days, it's working somewhat. Up until this morning, I would have said it was working well. Before this morning there was only one time he tried biting me & I thwarted it since he was a bit slower than before. Unlike before he was on medication, he did not continue to try and bite until he succeeded. However this morning, that's exactly what happened. He had to try three or four times, but eventually he hit flesh and then walked away. I will say this was right before he was fed & got his medication, so the previous dose was probably worn off.

Thanks everyone for your replies, i think im going to give it a bit more time as every day we seem to be coming to more agreements about things haha, i think ( hope ) that we just have to get used to each other a bit more.
Yesterday she came and jumped on my lap which was a total surprise so im putting the biting down to nerves ( hers and mine ) Fingers crossed it carrys on like this. Shes living outside at the moment as we live in Spain so its very hot and shes enjoying the garden so we have a few more months of hot weather to get to know each other better before we have to share a smaller space x
