Our cat really likes to chew on certain things, like window knobs, Xbox joysticks, and sometimes electrical cords. Has anybody tried giving their cat a chew toy with success? It's a bit annoying that there are so many dog chew toys but seemingly none for cats! I mean, I see there are like a couple on the Internet, but has anyone actually tried any and can recommend them from personal experience?

I got my chew-obsessed kitten this toy: Petstages ORKAkat Wiggle Worm Cat Toy but he would much rather go for all the things he isn't supposed to. I'd always try to persuade him to chew on the worm instead and practically shove it in his face when he'd bite at other things but alas, he's made up his mind. I'd recommend it just because you never know, your cat may enjoy it!

Electrical cords have an interesting taste mostly because of the copper wire in them. Your cat might need some mineral supplements. If memory serves me it could come from anemia as both copper and iron are needed for building blood. It's only a matter of time before it sinks it's teeth into a live wire so you have a deadline. Ever see Griswolds Christmas with the cat under the tree?

I had this problem early on with Bruce. Chewy toys didn't work, we would still go for the things he shouldn't.

What worked was more playtime, chasing, Da Bird... When he's not bored, we won't chew.

Now he still goes for the cord, to signal he's bored. But he swats it with his paw, and does not bite it.

Except for my apple charges... He has a weaked faschination with those, I have to keep them all hidden...

Thanks all for the suggestions!

Hmm.. I suspect it's got the most to do with general boredom. madzoya, your cat sounds like mine! The only cord he likes to chew is my Apple chargers and Apple earphones. Strange!

I had teething kittens before and one cat that just loved to chew on the corner of my dining room chairs. I found buying those small dog rawhide twists/bones then cutting them up into thirds worked great on teething kittens. You can never go wrong with toys either :)

Bored cats often chew on whatever they can fit into their mouths. Try playing with your cat more often.

Petstages makes a few cat chew toys: Cat Toy

Great idea! My Charlie loves the wiggle worm! If your cat reacts to catnip, then he might also like to play with and chew on something like this: Yeowww! Stinkies Catnip Filled Sardine Toy - Single (Assorted)

I actually found some chew sticks for cats. I don't remember where I got them unfortunately, but one package was all I needed. By the time he finished it, Mingo was through with the chewing.

Our chewer likes the Wiggle Worm, too... I even bought her a second one. Ireland will use them if they are just lying around on the floor. She also loves gnawing on durable stuffed catnip toys like Cosmic Catnip's: Annette and the banana are favorites.

When Milly was a kitten, the Wiggle Worm caused her to simply raise a skeptical eyebrow, her eyebrow hairs quivering. But I agree that the Pet Stages chew toys LTS3 mentions were more successful. You could search Pet Stages here on TCS too, to find out who has used them.

The thing is, when you have a teething kitten, nearly everything becomes chewing fodder! My husband's shoe horn also worked as a so-called chew toy. I did find that electrical cords became the victim when boredom was the cause, but everything else in the house becomes a potential chewing target when a kitten is teething. A human literally has to train like in that show, American Ninja Warrior, just to dart around the house kitten-proofing everything before the cat can get to it!

Milly's favorite "chew and play toy" a few years ago was actually this:

Luckily this chair of mine from Relax the Back was 11-12 years old at the time, already worn out, and was much less expensive than this chair is these days! She chewed on the leather armrests, and would leap on the top back of the chair to repeated wrestle and gnawed on it, and also used to seat edges as a scratching "post".
We've spun around in it together, too.

She still plays with jingle balls under the chair legs. Now my chair is a mess, and black duct tape covers the armrests so that she won't bite through them again. I can't afford a new one at the moment, but the chair is full of memories now... and Milly is through her teething stage.

:devilish:

Gypsy doesn't chew on things but she LOVES these, they're semi soft but last quite awhile and she literally chews them to pieces (she ignores the 'streamers') Petsmart is the only place in our town that carries them. She won't touch any of the other chewy things I've gotten for her, including rawhides.
