We've just moved into a new apartment and there's a large gap between the ceiling and cabinets.

Alice, of course, quickly discovered she could jump up there. It's not so much a problem with the cabinets beside the fridge because she can easily hop back down, but the cabinets on the other side of the kitchen aren't connected to anything, so she can get up but not down.

My fiance has already had to stand on a chair and haul her down (I'm not tall enough, even with a chair).

Does anyone know a good way to block off the top of the cabinets so she won't jump up there again? Or will she learn her lesson from getting stuck?

Edit: We could also put her cat shelves up leading up to the cabinets so she can get up and down easier, but should we really be encouraging that? Is it safe?

Hi there krazykatjenn, if she can get up there, chances are she'll be able to get down on her own.

But how in the first place she got up there? Is there a photo you can show us?

She jumped from the counter to the top of the cabinet. She's quite the jumper and has always liked challenging herself to crazy jumps. But she looked really anxious when she looked back down from the cabinets, and she kept acting like she was about to jump then getting scared and changing her mind. So maybe she could've gotten back down on her own, but I was getting worried that she'd get hurt when she tried.

Here's a picture of the kitchen (excuse the moving mess!)

Keep the counter top clear of stuffs so that she has a good space to land.

Unless you can stick another mid height cabinet or a ladder in between so that she use it to get down.

We could put her cat shelves on the wall beside the cabinets. We haven't unpacked them yet because we hadn't decided where they should go.

Do you think it's safe for her to be on top of the cabinets? Should we find a way to clean them first?

Proof that she is a crazy, high place loving cat:

If you can put the at shelves and make it secure would be good. Keep the top clean all the time and she should be safe up there.

My boy is also up on the top of the kitchen cabinet
D'aw, that little face peeking over the cabinet!

Sounds like we'll be cleaning the cabinets and setting up shelves today! Thanks for all your help!

Just keep the counter clear of food and sharp objects and it should be fine! Great exercise for Alice!

cats never over or under jump they land right where they want to be. If she got up there she can get down. Don't worry about it, they are pretty agile. My bengal jumps from the floor to the top of the frige. I say he's surveying his kingdom!
