hello! I am very new to this site, but am looking for advice for my 3 legged cat Betty.

I adopted her about a year after her amputation (front right leg).
She over licks and occasionally pulls out hair on her back sides by her tail. Both the right and left side are nearly bald (although not completely).
I haven't found evidence of hair pullings in the last few months, but she licks the area a lot, which I think prevents the hair from growing back.
I honestly feel like it is some sort of effect from the trauma of having a leg removed, but I am not sure. She definitely does not have flees, I have seen multiple vets about it.

Should I try Feliwat??
Has anyone else had this problem??

Thanks!!

Hello Bettythethreeleggedcat Bettythethreeleggedcat :wave3:, I know it's been over a week, but just wondering how your cat Betty, is doing?
I suppose it is possible that the over-grooming and fur pulling could be related to the amputation, if it is neurological in cause, but I would have hoped that one of the Vets that you had seen would have mentioned this, and offered Betty something to relieve either the itching, or the hair pulling.

I know you said that Betty does not have fleas, but even one bite, sometimes sets off an entire allergic reaction in some cats.

It also might be possible that the issue is cat food related, and your Betty might be having some sort of allergic reaction to her food? (Some members have had cats who have lost fur, due to food allergies, or food sensitivities.)
I'm sure you Vets have done blood work, but have they also done thyroid tests, to make sure it's okay?

Thank you for responding! All vets have done is check for fleas and done urine tests.
It definitely isn't her food because I have changed it in the past.
I got some feliway but I'm sceptical to try it because I'm nervous of bad side effects. I don't like taking her to the vet if it isn't completely necessary, so I might wait until I need to get her shots updated to ask more questions I guess.

Skin issues are usually allergies.
But if you think that it's stress related, then asking your Vet about giving some calming meds, might help. (I would only do this after any blood tests are done, and other options explored.)

I've not read about bad side effects to Feliway. The only things that I have read is that it works in some cats and not in others. Comfort Zone with Feliway Spray for Cats
There are more reviews on amazon.

Ask your Vet about 'Composure Calming Treats', too. Some members have said that they help, some have noticed no change.
I think you can find them at pet stores, and walmart etc.

Is your Betty doing okay, besides the hair pulling and over-grooming?

Another thread, on here, mentioned 'Anal Sacs/Anal Glands' in their cat, which were bothering them. Perhaps ask about this, too.
