Look, I'm all out of ideas of how to help my cat so I hope someone here can help me or we might have to say goodbye to my little boy. I'll give you his background and how his behaviour is now.
I have a family consisting of me (16) my mum (43) and my little brother (6) in Australia. I got my cat about 5 years ago now. I raised the cute, black, little bundle of joy in my room for most of the time he was a kitten I would let him out and about the house to run around during the day but he returned to my room and I did this for most of his kittenhood he was a nice kitten very playful and any bites or scratches were simply play. He was neutered once he came into season and was still a playful happy kitty afterwards.
Then he ventured out too far from home and got lost when he was about 2 or 3 years old, he was then found 2 months later in a drain pipe out at a camping ground out in the bush. The poor little guy was malnourished and was deathly skinny, so we looked after him fattened him up and made him feel at home again but something had changed about him.
He was overly affectionate and was terrified of being left alone. Since then he's been yowling at my door every night just to see me. So I guess he has had some attachment issues after losing us and is quite traumatised from his experience being lost out in the wild. But we got used to that and we thought he was getting better.
It was about less than a year ago we got our second addition, a cute, black, little girl!! We tried our best to help them get along and to like each other. They started out a little rough but we eased them into it at their pace. The little girl looked up to him and wasn't afraid in the slightest bit and just wanted to play with him. He on the other hand was terrified of her and then eventually tolerated her existence even playing with her sometimes just like he was a little kitten again. He'd occasionally get unhappy with her because she was too rough or she was taking his dominant spot on the cat stand so we let that go as we thought he was just asserting his dominance. We try to give him just as much attention as we do the little girl so he doesn't feel too jealous.
After a while he'd gotten really angry whenever he looked out the windows. He would end up walking them and screaming and we found out a stray black cat (black cats everywhere!!) had been coming around to check out our houseand he didn't like it one bit. He was extremely stressed and tense whenever he went near the windows or front door (on the same wall of the room). The stray cat eventually was deterred by his big shows of aggression and never came back but he persisted to freak out about the windows. I think most nights that he continued to protest was at his own reflection.
One night my mum had went to close the door and he happened to be just sitting there and usually he would move out of the way politely and had plenty of room to go anywhere else. But this time he had mauled my mum's leg until she was bleeding profusely from all over her leg. Usually in our experience having cats if you accidentally startled a cat they latch on and then they let go and run but instead my cat grabbed on more with the intent to kill her leg. This was a big shock to both me and my mum who have been raised with cats and know their temperaments pretty well. He has never before been this overly aggressive. And we've never seen a cat like this. We've been worried since then and have progressively seen him get angrier at random times. He can be overly loving and happy with me but the turns his mood around in an instant to growling and howling when I haven't provoked him and I haven't overly patted him. When he hears the jingling of the little kittens collar that's an instant trigger for him to growl, he growls at the sight of her. But he can be playing like a kitten with her and tearing around the house and then he'll turn around to her and get excessively angry with her. He gets angry when he doesn't get his food on time and takes it out on the kitten. He bites or scratches me sometimes unpredictabily and they are no longer the playful bites and scratches he used to do. We even got him in a good mood and were checking him all over for injuries or anything that would make him uncomfortable but we were unsuccessful in finding anything.
I really think he's showing sure signs or being bipolar and he's unpredictabily aggressive and this is a clear danger to my family and visitors. But I still love my little kitty so much and I wish I could just help him. But I'm afraid of there being no solution and we might have to have him put down as he's a danger to us. I just don't want to let my kitty go, please please if you know some way to help let me know!!!!

Ask your vet about medications. Just like with humans, sometimes a cat's brain chemistry can go haywire, and they need meds to even things out. Generic Prozac is pretty cheap (in the US anyway) so it's certainly worth a try.

I hope that soon we can afford to take him to the vet... We will give that a try but thank you for a little insight on what we'll be able to do!

My prozac for Tommy at 2.5 mg per day runs me about $13 USD for a bottle.
We did get his exam at the vet to paw him down, draw blood, urinalysis. All tests were ok so on to the medication.
He had an anxiety issue having him spraying as an adult neutered male.

Good luck SN & good on you for reaching out to the group. My cat Luciano was on Prozac when I first got him, but I tapered him off it. There are times when I wonder if maybe he should be back on it again. I believe there is a good healthcare plan for people in Australia, but I don't know how it works for animals. Do they get reasonably priced healthcare, or do vets charge more than human doctors for care & medicine?

I saw this kind of behaviour in a tv show called MY CAT FROM HELL or something. First of all, your cat is NOT mad at any of you. Male cats do NOT like stray cats that are outside of your front or back door. Your cat is territorial and it will be annoyed especially with other male cats. Your cat can smell the stray/ferrel cats hormones, pee or markings and that's enough to irritate him. You need to get rid of the stray cats and you will see your old cat come back to itself. Secondly, the jingling sound on the collar of your new cat just make it worse for him. So maybe remove that too. Most importantly, do the first solution. Getting rid of the ferrel/stray cats is your main solution as I saw this same problem on tv and that solved the issue.
