I got a new breakaway collar with a bell for Max today and he kind of freaked me out trying to get it off. He had it in his mouth trying to pull it off. Admittedly it kind of freaked me out. How long should I give him with the collar on before I give up? I don't want him to be unhappy, but I do want to know where he is and make sure he isn't getting in too much trouble.

The bell might drive me crazy, but that is another story.

If only the chip he had implanted in him had an iPhone app to know where your cat is.

It might help if you the same approach used when training a cat to wear a harness.   Basically, you start off with him wearing it for a short period of time and extend the time period until he's comfortable with it.  It really depends on the cat though.  My old Wesley managed to get every breakaway collar he ever wore off within 24 hours.   I finally gave up the struggle.

Max is an indoors cat, isn't he?  I take it that you need the bell in order to keep track of him within your house?

I think you're on to something with the iPhone app idea!

The Max may not like the collar but he certainly does look handsome in it.

Not gonna lie, I gave up the fight on trying to get my cat to wear a collar. She would dip her chin down and get the collar in her mouth in her struggles to get rid of it, probably a little like what your cat is doing?

The advice I've always seen is to have them wear the collar for short periods of time and gradually increase the amount of time until they're used to it. Alice could never get used to her collar for even the smallest amount of time. Or maybe I'm just a pushover? Either way, she never even tries to go outdoors, so I've just learned to shrug and let it be.

On the flip side, you could just leave the collar on him, and just keep an eye out so he doesn't hurt himself, and eventually he'll just accept it.
