I am wondering if anyone has experience with this...

I have 2 cats, brothers, from the same litter.  I have the worst time keeping one of my cats, Tosh, out of the plants, especially just after watering.  He cannot help himself.  I think it's the smell of moist dirt and desire to dig.  They are still kittens really, 10 months old.  Anyway, I just acquired some new plants from my father's house.  They are large so they are on the floor.  I gave both Mac & Tosh a warning and I think for the most part they are being respectful.  Later I saw Tosh, as usual, eyeing up one of the plants.  He got real close and appeared to be smelling it.  Mac was just watching. I gave Tosh a verbal warning.  I used a very low firm tone and said "Don't touch my plants!" while pointing my finger at him.  He immediately ran over to me, climbed gently up my leg (I was standing), he extended a single paw toward my face and ever so quietly, he squeaked, Tosh is the quieter cat.  I think he was asking forgiveness.  What do you all think?

And how do I keep them out of the plants without having to hang everything from the ceiling?  Though I think they would see that as a challenge.

I'm writing so I can get notifications when someone answers. You are not alone, if that comforts you, my bonsai trees are now placed on top of the fridge, where no light shines...

I would make sure any plant that comes in the home is not toxic to cats. I would also place small rocks on top of all the exposed dirt. If the cat can't dig in the dirt he should go elsewhere.

Thank you.  I hadn't thought of rocks.  They have been good about the plants so far but I am not sure how long that will last once I water them again.

I did look up all the plants that are dangerous to cats and I do not have any in my home.  I appreciate the reminder though.

Hi

I have a few ornamental trees and lots of succulents in my home..I have a "digger" as well.. i had to put chicken wire over the top of the planters.. i wrapped the planters in the wire the whole pots.. and i wrapped up in the bottom a weight.. i used small pavers from home depot.. i then wrapped the pots in beautiful fabric to cover the wire i used a glue gun so it was easy.. i can still water.. he cant get to the dirt thru the wire.. i weighted them so if he tried after to dig he would not tip them over anymore.. he hasn't even TRIED since the wire.. on my smaller pots the succulents.. i put white stones ontop of the dirt he does not dig at any of those anymore either.
