Taylor is about 1, was an indoor/outdoor, mostly outdoor cat when she came to us. I'm first to tell you I have next to no cat experience, so no clue how to fix this. She prefers to climb on the side of the litter box and perch much like a bird to poop. While it is quite amusing, she often flips the box. I'm constantly finding flipped boxes, or occasionally she perches in the wrong direction. I've tried bigger boxes, deeper boxes, boxes with more litter (to make heavier) nothing is working. I have not done a hooded box as not all of the cats will use those. Any hints to get 4 on the floor?

Hi Fender, your kitty perched on the litter box to do her business? I've never heard or seen one before but as you said it was amusing to see. I wanted to rule out that it's her habit but I was thinking maybe she does not like to step on the litter. You could try changing the kitter to another type say, smaller grains or larger grains or different texture? As we don't know what kind of litter you are using for her and whether she prefers other type. Is this the first time or is it it has been all the time since day one?

To flip a litter box requires quite a bit of strength from a cat. How much litter is in it? Have you tried a box with a side with a lower opening for her to walk in so that she don't have to climb and end up perching on it?

Try to take a photo and show us while she's at it if you can.

Oh, forgot to add, does she cover her pee/poo after that?

Yes she perches only to poop, she squats inside to pee. She is such a strange girl! She is very tidy. Covers everything, and if happens to perch the wrong direction she will find something (clothes, hand towel etc) to cover her accident also! Now I will have to say I've never seen her flip the box, but boxes keep getting flipped so I'm thinking it's the perching that's the culprit as I've seen that dozens of times. Currently using world's best cat litter (corn based I think) originally had a different clay one and she did the same thing. I have not used a cut out box, I'll give it a try though!

Currently we are using Xtra large pans, a couple of high walls there isn't a terribly deep.amount of litter in them1-2 ". When I had cheap standard pans, they were being dumped daily.

I'll try to catch her in action tonight

Well, I guess that she has proper normal elimination and tidy up after that, I wouldn't be much of a concern. Proably it's just her ;)
