You could always put the hard food in a blender and crunch it up fine, or put it in a bag and take a hammer to it. You could use it as a topper to his canned food.  I'd still wait though the longer he can wait the better.
I agree I will keep up with the canned only for a while. It's healthier anyway! Eventually i will try him on softened dry food. Softening it up with boiled water, then of course letting it cool. And then if he can handle that and all looks good I'll let him try some hard stuff. Who knows, if he's content on canned only I might just keep it that way and only give him dry for treats or snacks. Thanks for the support!

Yes the site is healing and he has recovered from the complications. The earlier update still stands. However the confusion about feeding is that he still has a large opening where the tooth was. It is healing tissue but it's still an open extraction site. It will take months to close in and maybe not even all the way. It's not painful anymore because it's healthy tissue. The post op feeding instructions were in regards to a closed extraction site not an open one.
Thanks for sharing.  Okay, the post op instructions is for a closed extraction.

Call the vet for post op open extraction.  Better to be safe then sorry.

My only advice would be to take it slow with the dry food. One of my guys had a sore tooth, but I only noticed it when he'd pick up a piece of food, bite into it and drop it. That's a sure sign something's wrong. He went completely off that food and hasn't touched it in two years. If Maddie loves his treats like my guys love theirs, I would definitely wait a while before giving him hard food...

Maddies clinic just called to check on him and see how he's doing. They also wanted to let me know that the doctor wants to see him again for another recheck. So he goes back Friday for another recheck with the doctor. I will ask then how long he should keep up with the soft food.

Great News that the vet is keeping in touch.  I think you should

have called the vet about the soft food.  Vets are more then

happy to help you in between visits or questions that you

have after the visit/surgery.  Hope all works out for you and

Maddie and you get your questions answered.  Tip:  Write

down all your questions before the Friday visit and bring

them with you.

I would have called the vet if I had any real concerns. I was only speculating about the soft food. To see if anyone had similar experiences to share what they did. I am a veterinary Technician student so I am able to make those decisions on my own. I know when I need help and when I can handle the situation. Thank you for your advice tho!

Maddie had another recheck appointment on Friday. It didn't go quite as expected. At his last appointment the vet made it seem like all was well and everything was all done healing wise. The site was open but it was healed and covered in mucosa. I thought that was end of story. However at this visit we discovered the site is still active and still needs to be  monitored. There was some minor bleeding in the extraction site, she said that is a good thing because it means there is active tissue trying to fill in the opening. So his site is trying to fill in rather than be a healed open site.  So that is great that its going to fill in, however because there is active tissue again he is going to need close monitoring until his mouth is finished whatever its trying to do. So its daily cleaning and checking of the site again. He also has to go back in another two weeks for another recheck. That stresses me because i am now back at school with him which is two hours away from his vet and i don't drive. So i need to work something out with my parents for him to stay with them for a bit to get to his appointment.

However he was cleared to go back to dry food. She said its healing well and thats not a tooth that he would chew with anyway so its all good for him to eat dry. She said that might actually be better because it might not cause as much debris in the site.

So there will be more updates to come! I will update and keep this thread active until it is officially all healed and filled in. When he is done having appointments and daily cleanings that's what i will consider done.
